The company held its annual shareholder meeting and as per ushe, CEO <strong>Elon Musk<\/strong> shared tidbits and musings about the company. While some of this was rehashing old information, there were a number of notable and newsmaker moments.<\/p>\n<p>Top of the list? <strong>JB Straubel<\/strong>, a <strong>Tesla<\/strong> co-founder and former CTO, has <a href=\"https:\/\/techcrunch.com\/2023\/05\/16\/tesla-shareholders-elect-former-cto-co-founder-jb-straubel-to-board\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">returned as a board member<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Other items that got my attention included another delay for the <a href=\"https:\/\/techcrunch.com\/2023\/05\/16\/tesla-roadster-production-has-been-pushed-back-again\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">next-gen Roadster<\/a>, hints of two <a href=\"https:\/\/techcrunch.com\/2023\/05\/16\/elon-musk-teases-two-new-evs-says-tesla-is-already-building-one\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">upcoming EV products<\/a> and Musk\u2019s decision to \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/techcrunch.com\/2023\/05\/16\/elon-musk-says-tesla-will-try-a-little-advertising\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">try a little advertising<\/a>.\u201d Here\u2019s a <a href=\"https:\/\/techcrunch.com\/2023\/05\/16\/tesla-shareholders-meeting-no-succession-plan-a-co-founder-returns-and-two-evs-teased\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">roundup of our coverage<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Speaking of Musk, he\u00a0lost another bid to <a href=\"https:\/\/techcrunch.com\/2023\/05\/15\/chief-twit-elon-musk-loses-appeal-to-be-able-to-tweet-about-tesla-unchecked\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">end a 2018 settlement<\/a> with the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission that requires oversight of some of his Tesla-related tweets. That\u2019s especially true for e-bikes, so don\u2019t let someone tell you you\u2019re cheating if you don\u2019t ride a push bike to work.<\/p>\n<p>But remember, e-bikes and e-scooters should be treated with care and responsibility.<\/p>\n<p>A <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dailymail.co.uk\/news\/article-12096377\/Video-shows-e-scooter-explode-flames-kitchen.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">shocking video<\/a> of an e-scooter catching fire in a London home has been going around. The owner of the scooter bought it off Gumtree (a Craigslist-type site) and was charging it inside when the battery caught fire, which spread rapidly. This is a PSA for safe e-scooter practices!<\/p>\n<p>Here are <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nationalfirechiefs.org.uk\/E-bikes-and-e-scooters-fire-safety-guidance#:~:text=If%20you%20charge%20or%20store,occur%20you%20can%20respond%20quickly.\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">tips and best practices<\/a> on owning and storing a scooter. A few that are especially important:<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>Buy a scooter from a reputable company that equips its vehicles with batteries that are compliant with global standards.<\/li>\n<li>Don\u2019t charge batteries overnight while you\u2019re asleep or while you\u2019re away from home.<\/li>\n<li>Don\u2019t dispose of batteries in household waste or normal recycling. Find a battery recycling service.<\/li>\n<li>Avoid storing and charging e-scooters and e-bikes on escape routes or communal areas of multi-occupied buildings.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p><strong>And with that, onto the news nuggets \u2026<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>BackPedal<\/strong> is a new British startup that offers <a href=\"https:\/\/backpedal.co\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">e-bike theft protection<\/a> via a monthly subscription. Included in that subscription are things like an integrated GPS system with LTE and a retrieval team that tracks your stolen bike and calls the cops for you. My question for the company: Do the cops \u2014 who are busy these days with increased crime in major cities \u2014 actually do anything to help people retrieve bikes?<\/p>\n<p>A <a href=\"https:\/\/www.intelligenttransport.com\/transport-news\/146202\/calls-for-more-micro-mobility-parking-spaces-in-europe\/?utm_source=substack&amp;utm_medium=email\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">study<\/a> commissioned by <strong>Bolt<\/strong> found that about half of residents in the Netherlands, Germany and Portugal want to see more micromobility parking spots and fewer car parking spots. Same.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Christchurch<\/strong>, New Zealand, might be the first city in the country to back a campaign for <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thepress.co.nz\/a\/nz-news\/350012337\/christchurch-city-council-backs-school-strike-4-climate-demand-for-ebike-subsidy\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">e-bike subsidies<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Citi Bike<\/strong> has been <a href=\"https:\/\/www.curbed.com\/2023\/05\/citi-bike-nyc-ridership-10-years.html?utm_source=substack&amp;utm_medium=email\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">around for 10 years<\/a>. The iconic bike-sharing program has been a staple in NYC and other cities since before it belonged to Lyft.<\/p>\n<p><strong>General Motors<\/strong>, in partnership with SAIC-Wuling in China, is building a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.foxnews.com\/auto\/gm-unveils-pickup-buy-usa?utm_source=substack&amp;utm_medium=email\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">super cute tiny electric pickup<\/a> for the Chinese market that\u2019s expected to cost around $14,000. It\u2019s about the size of a Fiat 500, and potentially a great solution for urban tradespeople.<\/p>\n<p><strong>India<\/strong> is considering slashing its electric two-wheeler subsidies from 40% of the sale price to 15%, ostensibly to spread the incentive to a larger number of vehicles <a href=\"https:\/\/economictimes.indiatimes.com\/industry\/renewables\/e-scooters-may-get-pricier-on-proposed-subsidy-cut\/articleshow\/100312656.cms\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">(link to paywall site<\/a>).<\/p>\n<p><strong>New York City<\/strong> announced a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nyc.gov\/html\/dot\/html\/pr2023\/dot-announces-expand-of-public-spaces.shtml\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">$30 million RFP<\/a> to create and sustain high-quality public spaces, like plazas and Open Streets, in under-resourced neighborhoods.<\/p>\n<p>As I mentioned last week, there have been rumors floating around about <strong>Tier<\/strong> pondering an acquisition. This week, <a href=\"https:\/\/sifted.eu\/articles\/bolt-acquire-rival-tier-news\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Sifted reported<\/a> that European transportation super app Bolt is in late-stage acquisition talks with Tier. Tier had reportedly also been in M&amp;A talks with Lime, but those talks ended, according to Sifted, which cited a source close to the company. I reached out to Tier, but no comment. The company only confirmed that it recently raised a convertible note from the majority of its existing investors.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe are well financed for 2023 and we are aiming to achieve EBITDA profitability this year,\u201d Lawrence Leuschner, Tier\u2019s CEO, told TechCrunch.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Yamaha<\/strong> announced a limited-edition e-bike to celebrate its 30th year of e-bike building. The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.yamahabicycles.com\/bikes\/ydx-moro-07\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">YDX-MORO 07<\/a>, priced at $6,499, has a dual twin frame design that holds Yamaha\u2019s new, lighter and smaller PW-X3 drive unit with powerful torque. That flatish result is actually worth cheering because investor activity has been falling since the beginning of the year.<\/p>\n<p>In January, automotive-related startups raised $1.16 billion. That figure dropped to $690.5 million in February and $394.1 million in March.<\/p>\n<p>This doesn\u2019t mean everything is unicorns and rainbows now. The chaos surrounding the Silicon Valley Bank may have ebbed, but mobility startups are competing for investor attention and capital as other buzzy areas like generative AI takeover.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Other deals that got my attention this week \u2026<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Bird<\/strong> has decided to issue a <a href=\"https:\/\/techcrunch.com\/2023\/05\/18\/bird-stock-dips-11-on-news-of-reverse-stock-split\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">reverse stock split<\/a>, in an attempt to get back into compliance with the New York Stock Exchange after it received a delisting notice for trading too low. Bird\u2019s stock closed Thursday at $0.11. When the market opened Friday, Bird began trading on a 1\/25 split-adjusted basis. As of May 1, there were about 286.8 million shares of Class A common stock and 34.5 million shares of Class X common stock. After the reverse stock split, Bird will have about 11.5 million Class A shares and about 1.4 million Class X shares.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Brompton<\/strong>, a U.K.-based company that makes folding bikes, raised \u00a319 million equity capital with investor BGF taking a minority stake.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Ethernovia<\/strong>, an automotive ethernet chip startup based in Silicon Valley, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/technology\/silicon-valley-automotive-ethernet-chip-startup-ethernovia-raises-64-mln-2023-05-15\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">raised $64 million<\/a> in a Series A funding round from a group of investors that includes Porsche Automobil Holding, Qualcomm Ventures and VentureTech Alliance.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Phantom Auto<\/strong> <a href=\"https:\/\/techcrunch.com\/2023\/05\/18\/where-remote-driving-startup-phantom-auto-has-found-new-funding-and-customers\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">raised $25 million<\/a> from private equity firm InfraBridge. The remote driving startup\u2019s pre-raise valuation was $500 million, according to one source. And the CEO of ConGlobal, the rail terminal operator that is owned by InfraBridge and a customer of the startup, has joined the board.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Robert Bosch Venture Capital<\/strong>, the corporate venture capital entity of the Bosch Group,<a href=\"https:\/\/www.bosch-presse.de\/pressportal\/de\/en\/bosch-ventures-closes-investment-round-in-autocore-ai-254784.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"> completed an investment<\/a> in <strong>AutoCore.ai<\/strong>, a startup that develops automotive middleware. The company didn\u2019t disclose the investment amount.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Stellantis<\/strong> acquired a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.stellantis.com\/en\/news\/press-releases\/2023\/may\/stellantis-to-acquire-equal-stake-with-faurecia-and-michelin-in-symbio-a-leader-in-zero-emission-hydrogen-mobility\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">33.3% stake<\/a> in <strong>Symbio<\/strong>, a zero-emission hydrogen mobility company. The lab will no longer operate under the basic research institute.<\/p>\n<p id=\"speakable-summary\"><strong>Cruise<\/strong> and <strong>Waymo<\/strong> are on the cusp of securing <a href=\"https:\/\/techcrunch.com\/2023\/05\/18\/cruise-waymo-near-approval-to-charge-for-24-7-robotaxis-in-san-francisco\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">final approval<\/a> to charge fares for fully autonomous robotaxi rides throughout the city of San Francisco at all hours of the day or night. The <strong>California Public Utilities Commission<\/strong> <a href=\"https:\/\/docs.cpuc.ca.gov\/SearchRes.aspx?ProposedDecisions=1&amp;DaySearch=30\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">published two draft resolutions<\/a> late last week that would grant the companies the ability to extend the hours of operation and service areas of their now-limited robotaxi services.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Ouster<\/strong> will supply May Mobility <a href=\"https:\/\/www.businesswire.com\/news\/home\/20230516005278\/en\/Ouster-Announces-Expansion-of-[\u2026]to-Support-Autonomous-Vehicle-Deployments-Around-the-Globe\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">with lidar<\/a> to power May\u2019s autonomous vehicles.<\/p>\n<p><strong>TuSimple<\/strong>, the once high-flying autonomous trucks company that went public in 2021, is restructuring and <a href=\"https:\/\/techcrunch.com\/2023\/05\/18\/tusimple-to-lay-off-30-of-u-s-workforce-keep-china-business\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">laying off about 30%<\/a> of its global workforce as it works to preserve cash and stay in business. One of the more interesting pieces of this restructuring (the second in six months) was the decision to keep its China subsidiary. The company was also at risk of being delisted from Nasdaq, but received a<a href=\"https:\/\/techcrunch.com\/2023\/05\/15\/tusimple-gets-temporary-reprieve-from-nasdaq-delisting\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"> temporary reprieve<\/a> from the exchange.<\/p>\n<h3>Electric vehicles, batteries and charging<\/h3>\n<p><strong>BMW<\/strong> is working with Pacific Gas and Electric to test <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pgecorp.com\/corp\/news-details.page?pageID=40cce734-8ec7-4271-a1a0-691b1d69fd5d&amp;ts=1684281600161\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">vehicle-to-grid technology<\/a> to offset growing grid demand.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Mercedes-Benz Vans<\/strong> revealed more details on a new <a href=\"https:\/\/arstechnica.com\/cars\/2023\/05\/cargo-passengers-even-campers-mercedes-benz-has-a-new-ev-van-platform\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">fully scalable electric vehicle architecture<\/a>, called Van.EA. The new platform will be able to support a range of sizes, including midsize luxury vans and full-size cargo and camper vans.
