Day-to-day, I\u2019m OK. From a macro picture, how am I doing? My heart is shattered in a million pieces,\u201d Sheinelle revealed. \u201cThe life that I\u2019ve known since I was 19 is no more. I always wanted kids, and I have three kids of my own now and they lost their dad. I\u2019m their mom, and it sucks. So, how am I doing? It\u2019s day-to-day. I\u2019m proud of myself for how I\u2019ve coped so far. I\u2019m proud of my kids for how we\u2019ve been able to pull through, but it\u2019s horrible.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Sheinelle and Uche, who married in 2007, shared three children together \u2014 son <strong>Kayin<\/strong>, 16, and 13-year-old twins, <strong>Uche<\/strong> and<strong> Clara<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_725167\" style=\"width: 1024px;\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\">\n<div class=\"ratio-based-placeholder\" style=\"padding-bottom:66.75%;\"><\/div><figcaption class=\"photo-credit photo-credit-caption\"><span class=\"credit\">Nathan Congleton\/NBC via Getty Images<\/span><\/figcaption><figcaption class=\"wp-caption-text wp-caption-text-credit\"><span class=\"caption\"><\/p>\n<p> TODAY \u2014 Pictured: Sheinelle Jones with her family and TODAY crew after completing the 2023 TCS New York City Marathon on Sunday, November 5, 2023 \u2014 (Photo by: Nathan Congleton\/NBC via Getty Images)<\/p>\n<p><\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>During the interview, Sheinelle reflected on the nearly three decades of love they shared, from their college days at Northwestern University to their final moments together. \u201cI remember staring out the window, and I\u2019m like, oh, my God, it\u2019s like this crazy, full-circle moment,\u201d she said of sitting in his hospital room with a view of New York City. \u201cHere we are again, not talking, and it feels like a beautiful nightmare.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>She explained how they found strength in each other even in the darkest hours. \u201cWe would just hold hands, and the nurses would come in, and they would call us the lovebirds. And we would just look at each other, say \u2018I love you,\u2019 and hold hands. But that\u2019s what I mean by beautiful nightmare.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Uche\u2019s battle with brain cancer tested Sheinelle\u2019s faith, something she openly admitted. \u201cThere are times where I\u2019m like, \u2018God, I\u2019ve been praying for this job since I was in fifth grade\u2019 \u2026 and you take my husband. Are you kidding me?\u201d she said. \u201cLike, really?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Despite her doubts, she ultimately leaned on her faith and treasured every moment with Uche. \u201cI didn\u2019t want to be so strong that I missed this blessing right in front of me \u2014 that I missed the fight, that I missed the beauty in the fight. That I missed just looking in his eyes. Because I was his oxygen sometimes. I would just (whisper), \u2018I love you. We\u2019re going to be OK. I love you. Look at me. I\u2019m here.\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The couple would have celebrated their 18th wedding anniversary on September 1. Through tears, Sheinelle confessed, \u201cIf you ask me if this was going to be my fate, I would do it all over again.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Now back on <em>Today<\/em>, Sheinelle hopes her return will inspire others going through grief. \u201cWe don\u2019t move on, but we move forward with our loved ones,\u201d she shared. \u201cSo don\u2019t get me wrong, my heart still hurts. So if you see me now and you see me laughing [\u2026] you root for me because I\u2019m fighting for my joy.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Uche passed away in May at age 45 after a private battle with glioblastoma, a rare and aggressive brain cancer. As Guthrie said at the time, \u201cThere are no words for the pain that we feel for Sheinelle and their three young children. Uche was an incredible person.
