Martha Plimpton is \u2018not ashamed\u2019 of her ADHD<\/p>\n
The 54-year-old actress received her diagnosis of the condition in her early 50s and has now said getting it was a \u201chuge relief\u201d instead of a worry as it helped explain her behaviour.<\/p>\n
Appearing at the premiere of Task in New York City while wearing a necklace that read \u2018ADHD\u2019, she told Page Six: \u201cI\u2019m actually a late diagnosis ADHD, like millions of others. <\/p>\n
\u201cIt was actually a huge relief to be diagnosed. So many little things fell into place and made sense that hadn\u2019t made sense before. <\/p>\n
\u201cI\u2019m not ashamed and (I\u2019m) finally free. I\u2019m glad to be sharing my ADHD-ness with the world.\u201d<\/p>\n
\nAccording to the US National Institute of Mental Health, attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder is defined as a developmental condition with symptoms of inattention, hyperactivity and impulsivity. <\/p>\n
\nIt is described as \u201cchronic and debilitating\u201d and one that can affect many aspects of daily life.<\/p>\n
\nMartha is returning to television in Task, in which she plays an FBI supervisor alongside Mark Ruffalo, 57. Speaking about her role, she said: \u201cShe\u2019s a special agent in charge, and she\u2019s a woman, so she\u2019s worked really hard to get where she is. <\/p>\n
\n\u201cSo that means she\u2019s had to deal with some bulls***. <\/p>\n
\n\u201cShe\u2019s a woman who I think knows how to cut through the c*** and take care of business.\u201d<\/p>\n
\nAlong with being candid about her ADHD, the actress has long been an advocate for abortion rights. <\/p>\n
\nDespite the 2022 overturning of the Roe v Wade ruling, she said she remained determined to continue speaking out about the issue. <\/p>\n
\nShe has said: \u201cI never lose hope, that\u2019s what they want. <\/p>\n
\n\u201cIt\u2019s absolutely possible to avail oneself of the tools and mechanisms to self-manage one\u2019s own abortion. \u201cI think it\u2019s really important to spread the message that mifepristone and misoprostol are still legal in this country, they\u2019re still accessible, and they\u2019re a perfectly safe and reliable way of terminating a pregnancy.\u201d<\/p>\n
\nThe US Supreme Court overturned Roe v Wade in June 2022, ending the federal constitutional right to abortion and allowing individual states to set their own laws on the procedure.<\/p>\n
\nMartha\u2019s Task series will air on HBO and HBO Max from 7 September.<\/p>\n
