This historic victory made Sabalenka the first woman to defend her U.S. Open championship since <a href=\"https:\/\/www.usmagazine.com\/celebrities\/serena-williams\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>Serena Williams<\/strong><\/a> in 2014.<\/p>\n<p>Sabalenka dropped to her knees and let out a cheer after clinching victory, before graciously hugging Anisimova on the court. Sabalenka acknowledged Anisimova\u2019s effort during an on-court interview moments later.<\/p>\n<p>With her opponent standing feet away, the U.S. Open 2025 women\u2019s champion told Anisimova: \u201cCongrats Amanda on reaching back to back Slam final [Wimbledon and U.S. Open]. I know how much it hurts, losing in the final. But trust me, the moment you\u2019re going to win the first one \u2014 and you are going to win it. Townsend, 28, shook hands with Ostapenko, also 28, after winning their match at the New York City tournament on Wednesday, August 27. However, things took a quick turn when the athletes appeared to get into a heated confrontation on [\u2026]\t\t<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p>\u201cCongrats to you and your team on the things you\u2019ve achieved after your comeback,\u201d she added. \u201cGirl, you\u2019re gonna enjoy it even more after the tough losses in the final.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>In her own on-court interview, Anisimova told the crowd: \u201cLosing in two final in a row is great but it\u2019s also super hard. I think I didn\u2019t fight hard enough for my dreams today but I just want to say congrats to Aryna.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Anisimova, 24, has mounted a remarkable comeback after stepping away from the sport to focus on her mental health. I\u2019ve worked as hard as I could to push through it. I will miss being out there, and I appreciate all the continuous support.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Ranked No. 50 worldwide in August 2024, she surged to No. 9 after first making it to the Wimbledon final in July \u2014 where she lost to <strong>Iga \u015awi\u0105tek<\/strong> \u2014 and followed up with an impressive run in the U.S. Open, where she avenged her Wimbledon loss to \u015awi\u0105tek in the quarterfinal this week.<\/p>\n<p>While Anisimova and Sabalenka showed their respect for one another at the U.S. Open final on Saturday, they did have a testy exchange earlier in the year. The New Jersey native upset Sabalenka in the Wimbledon 2025 semifinal in July, though there was controversy during a game in the third set where Anisimova\u2019s forehand volley touched the top of the net cord before falling over.<\/p>\n<p>Sabalenka suggested in a post-match press conference that Anisimova owed her an apology for the error.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI just looked at her and I just, for sure, she didn\u2019t hear me, but I was just like, \u2018You don\u2019t want to say sorry?\u2019 But she just wanted, I guess, badly to win this match. The \u201cfirst-of-its-kind, real-time, episodic series\u201d from the 27-year-old World No. 1 women\u2019s single tennis champion will launch Thursday, July 17, on her Youtube channel, Us Weekly can exclusively reveal. The series will [\u2026]\t\t<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p>Following her 6-4, 4-6, 6-4 semifinal loss at Wimbledon, Sabalenka also complained that Anisimova prematurely celebrated a point and should have been docked by the referee.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI was just trying to chase the ball. She was already celebrating it.
