Sheinelle Jones<\/strong> <\/a>opened up about her decision to temporarily step back from the Today <\/i>show this year amid her late husband Uche Ojeh<\/strong>\u2019s cancer battle.<\/p>\n

\u201cI know that I was strong, but I didn\u2019t want to be so strong that I missed this blessing right in front of me [and] that I missed the fight,\u201d Jones, 47, said during a Today <\/i><\/a>interview that aired on Friday, September 5. \u201c[I didn\u2019t want to miss] looking in his eyes \u2018cause I was his oxygen sometimes.\u201d<\/p>\n

According to Jones, she would tell Ojeh, \u201cI love you\u201d and \u201cLook at me, I\u2019m here\u201d while he was undergoing cancer treatment.<\/p>\n

Jones confirmed in January that she would take a sabbatical from Today <\/i>following a then-undisclosed \u201cfamily health matter.\u201d The following May, cohost Savannah Guthrie<\/strong> revealed that Ojeh died after a battle with glioblastoma<\/a>, an aggressive form of brain cancer. He was 45.<\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tThe hosts of Today have offered some insight into how Sheinelle Jones has been coping with the death of her husband, Uche Ojeh. On May 23, Savannah Guthrie announced on the NBC morning show that Ojeh died at age 45 after a private battle with the brain cancer glioblastoma. \u201cThere are no words for the [\u2026]\t\t<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\u201cI wanted to be proud of [being there for Uche], so that was the only reason I thought, \u2018All right, it\u2019s time,\u2019\u201d Jones said on Friday<\/a> of her hiatus from the broadcasts. \u201cI always knew I would know when it was time to get off the treadmill for a second \u2014 and he was not very happy with me when I told him I was gonna take a leave from work.\u201d<\/p>\n

Jones said that Ojeh told her, \u201cNo, no, why?\u201d<\/p>\n

The answer was easy for Jones, who simply \u201cwanted to be\u201d with her husband of 17 years.<\/p>\n

\u201cHe goes, \u2018OK,\u2019\u201d she quipped. \u201cIt was weird for me. I\u2019ve been popping up at 3 a.m. since I can remember, you know? But it was a beautiful time, and I\u2019m happy I can say I wouldn\u2019t trade it. I had Christmas, I had every morning [and] I had New Year\u2019s. I had all the days fully. I was fully present. I fought for my joy, and I fought for being present.\u201d<\/p>\n

Jones also tried to be \u201cpresent\u201d<\/a> for her and Ojeh\u2019s three children: Kayin, 16, and twins Clara and Uche, both 13.<\/p>\n
