Paul Mescal will play Sir Paul McCartney<\/p>\n
The 29-year-old actor will portray the legendary musician in director Sir Sam Mendes’ upcoming four Beatles films and he’s confirmed he’s been lucky enough to spend time with the “extraordinary” singer as part of his research.<\/p>\n
Asked if he’s met McCartney, he said: \u201cI have, yeah. He\u2019s an extraordinary man, like to spend any time\u2014 it\u2019s a crazy sentence to say that I\u2019ve spent time with that man, let alone play him.”<\/p>\n
And the Normal People star confirmed he’ll be recording his own vocals for the films.<\/p>\n
Asked if he’ll do his own singing, he said: \u201cYeah, yeah, absolutely yeah.\u201d<\/p>\n
\nThe movies will also star Barry Keoghan as Sir Ringo Starr, Harris Dickinson as the late John Lennon and Joseph Quinn as the late George Harrison.<\/p>\n
\nAnd Barry previously recalled how he “couldn’t look at” the drummer, let alone show off his musical skills, when they first met.<\/p>\n
\nSpeaking on ‘Jimmy Kimmel Live’, the Banshees of Inisherin actor said: “I met him at his house, and he played the drums for me. He asked me to play, but I wasn’t playing the drums for Ringo.<\/p>\n
\n“And when I was talking to him, I couldn’t look at him. I was nervous, like right now. But he’s like, ‘You can look at me.'”<\/p>\n
\nThe 32-year-old actor doesn’t want to just “imitate” Ringo in his performance but is keen to “study” the musician as much as he can.<\/p>\n
\nHe said: “My job is to observe and kinda taken in mannerisms and study him.<\/p>\n
\n“I want to humanise him and bring feelings to it and not just sort of imitate.”<\/p>\n
\nDespite his nerves at their meeting, Barry found Ringo to be “absolutely lovely”.<\/p>\n
\nDirector Sam previously explained that he pitched the idea of making four films about the ‘Hey Jude’ group in 2023 and wowed Sony executives Tom Rothman and Elizabeth Gabler with his plans.<\/p>\n
\nHe told Deadline last year: “We went out to Los Angeles just before Christmas to pitch the project, and it\u2019s fair to say we were met with universal enthusiasm.<\/p>\n
\n“The reason Sony stood out from competing offers was down to Tom and Elizabeth\u2019s passion for the idea, and commitment to propelling these films theatrically in an innovative and exciting way.”<\/p>\n
\nThe movies have the approval of the surviving Beatles, Paul and Ringo, and of John and George’s families. It marks the first time both them and rights holders Apple have granted a scripted film full life story and music rights.<\/p>\n
\nIt is currently unclear when the movies will be released or in what order.<\/p>\n
