On Friday, September 5, Sydney Sweeney<\/strong> will arrive at the Toronto International Film Festival, making her first major public appearance since the controversy surrounding her new American Eagle campaign<\/a> captivated the internet (and Donald Trump<\/strong>). She hasn\u2019t spoken about the divisive ads yet\u2014and tells Vanity Fair<\/em> that she doesn\u2019t plan to start now. \u201cI am there to support my movie and the people involved in making it, and I\u2019m not there to talk about jeans,\u201d she says. \u201cThe movie\u2019s about Christy, and that\u2019s what I\u2019ll be there to talk about.\u201d<\/p>\n

That would be Christy Martin,<\/strong> a groundbreaking professional boxer who rose to prominence in the \u201990s. The Euphoria<\/em> star plays Martin, nicknamed \u201cthe Coal Miner\u2019s Daughter,\u201d in Christy,<\/em> which tracks the athlete from her humble beginnings in West Virginia to her ascent as the biggest star female boxer in the world. \u201cI was blown away that her story wasn\u2019t more known on a universal, global level because it\u2019s just one of the most harrowing and inspiring women that I\u2019ve ever met in my entire life,\u201d Sweeney tells Vanity Fair<\/em> exclusively.<\/p>\n

For this career-best performance, Sweeney underwent an intense physical transformation, gaining more than 30 pounds and weathering concussions during her months-long training. She also delivers a knock-out emotional performance as the story takes an unexpected turn after Martin\u2019s relationship with her husband turns violent. Directed by David Mich\u00f4d,<\/strong> Christy<\/em> is more than a boxing story\u2014it\u2019s a tale of survival. \u201cOne of the things that drew me to this story was the idea of being able to make a movie that starts, in a way, as a beautiful, wild, underdog sports movie,\u201d says Mich\u00f4d, \u201cbut then starts to shift into something that\u2019s really harrowing and, ultimately, deeply moving.\u201d<\/p>\n
