Channing Tatum<\/strong><\/a> wasn\u2019t expecting to drop nearly 70 pounds for his role in Roofman<\/em> \u2014 and the crew wasn\u2019t exactly thrilled by his sudden slim down, either.<\/p>\n

\u201cJeff is a really thin guy. He\u2019s not as big boned as me. I think he\u2019s tall but he\u2019s just really wiry,\u201d Tatum, 45, explained of his character during an interview with Variety<\/em><\/a> published on Tuesday, September 2. \u201cSo wired and really fit.\u201d<\/p>\n

To embody the character \u2014 a robber known for slipping into tight spaces and living in the walls of a Toys R Us \u2014 Tatum said he decided to lose a little weight, especially because he was heavier than usual due to a different project.<\/p>\n

\u201cI had just done a role earlier that year and I got up to 240 [pounds],\u201d he explained. \u201cI only planned to get down to 185. Once I was already going [with] the days of shooting, it kept coming off. I got down to 172.\u201d<\/p>\n

Roofman<\/em> director Derek Cianfrance<\/strong> revealed in the same interview<\/a> that their assistant director Mariela Comitini<\/strong> was \u201cconcerned\u201d by Tatum\u2019s weight loss.<\/p>\n

\u201cShe\u2019s like, \u2018That\u2019s it.\u2019 She\u2019s like, \u2018Get him a steak right now,\u2019\u201d Tatum recalled. \u201cI was like, \u2018I think you\u2019re right.\u2019 This is weird.\u201d<\/p>\n

The actor reflected<\/a> on the transformation, noting, \u201cIt was sort of an emptiness and a sadness to it. I would see myself and just seem hollow.\u201d<\/p>\n

Tatum added, \u201cThe movie to me was a lot of loneliness. A real meditation for that wanting to be full. \u2026 That empty feeling sucks after a while.\u201d<\/p>\n

In Roofman<\/em>, which hits theaters on October 10, Tatum plays real-life criminal Jeffrey Manchester<\/strong>. Manchester famously broke out of prison in 2004 where he was serving time for robbing different McDonalds to provide for his daughter.<\/p>\n

While on the run, Manchester hid for months in a Toys R Us located in Charlotte, North Carolina. He slept behind a wall in the store during the day and would go out at night and live a double life.<\/p>\n

Manchester was eventually arrested and is currently serving time in North Carolina\u2019s Central Prison. He is expected to be released in 2036.<\/p>\n

Tatum, for his part, previously showed off his weight loss<\/a> via social media in March when he said he was down to 205 pounds.<\/p>\n

He shared a photo at the time when he was 235 pounds working on the film Josephine. In a separate image, Tatym weighed 172 pounds amid Roofman\u2019s<\/em> filming.<\/p>\n

\u201cI\u2019m so grateful for my genetics. Grateful for my chef\/nutritionist\/witch. Grateful for my trainer. I couldn\u2019t make these big swings in my weight without you guys,\u201d the Magic Mike<\/em> star<\/a> wrote via social media in March. \u201cBut I won\u2019t be doing any more fat roles haha. It\u2019s too hard on the body and too hard to take off now. But damn when I look at these pics it\u2019s just wild what the human body and will can do.\u201d<\/p>\n
