Sydney Sweeney\u2019s American Eagle ad campaign<\/a> has generated quite a bit of controversy.<\/p>\nCritics say the jeans\/genes pun at the center of the ads had uncomfortable racist\/eugenicist undertones.<\/p>\n
We doubt that it was Sydney\u2019s intention to ingnite an intense debate on social media, but that\u2019s exactly what happened. In fact, it\u2019s hard to think of another time when an ad campaign sparked so much division.<\/p>\n
You\u2019d think that after such a debacle, Sydney would steer clear of endorsement deals for a while. For the most part, the response from commenters was positive.<\/p>\n
But once again, a number of folks found aspects of the campaign problematic.<\/p>\n
Jimmy Choo accused of \u2018poor timing,\u2019 \u2018mocking ballet\u2019<\/h2>\n \u201cThat\u2019s poor timing of the brand,\u201d wrote one commenter.<\/p>\n
\u201cAnother case study in \u2018How to kill your brand,’\u201d a second remarked.<\/p>\n
\u201cBoooo,\u201d a third chimed in.<\/p>\n
It seems that most of the objections had to do with the use of the term \u201chobo.\u201d But there were other beefs, as well.<\/p>\n
For example, @modelsdoingballet account reportedly objected<\/a> that the Jimmy Choo social media team seems to be \u201cmocking ballet,\u201d which is \u2026 certainly a take. <\/p>\n\u201cSorry, but the Jimmy Choo brand value is not currently strong enough to be making this mistake,\u201d another commenter reportedly wrote.<\/p>\n
\u201cWhoever approved this, and thought this was a good idea\u2026.they should simply look at these comments. \u201cShe\u2019s the it girl right now. Keep climbing @sydney_sweeney there\u2019s always going to be a mob of haters trying to tear you down harder the further you rise! Laugh to the bank sweetie!\u201d another echoed.<\/p>\n
If remaining a topic of conversation is the goal, then Sydney and her PR team certainly seem to know what they\u2019re doing!<\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n
