Veteran indie filmmaker Jim Jarmusch premiered his new movie \u201cFather Mother Sister Brother\u201d today at the Venice Film Festival, where journalists asked him about Mubi<\/a>, the streaming platform that co-produced the film \u2014 specifically, about Mubi\u2019s recent $100 million funding round<\/a> led by Sequoia Capital.<\/p>\n \u201cI was disappointed and disconcerted by this relationship,\u201d Jarmusch said, while noting that his own \u201crelationship with Mubi started much before that, and they were fantastic to work with on this film.\u201d<\/p>\n Numerous filmmakers \u2014 including those with ties to Mubi \u2014 signed an open letter<\/a> criticizing the streamer for accepting money from Sequoia and saying that the firm\u2019s backing of Israeli defense tech startup Kela meant that \u201cMubi\u2019s financial growth as a company is now explicitly tied to the genocide in Gaza.\u201d (Mubi\u2019s founder and CEO subsequently insisted<\/a> that \u201cany suggestion that our work is connected to funding the war is simply untrue.\u201d)<\/p>\n For his part, Jarmusch said at his film\u2019s press conference that he\u2019s \u201cnot the spokesman\u201d for Mubi, but rather an independent filmmaker who\u2019s \u201ctaken money from various sources to fund my films.\u201d<\/p>\n \u201cAll corporate money is dirty,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n
