Riz Ahmed feared he wouldn’t ‘get his life back’ during his ‘very intense’ hospitalisation<\/p>\n
The 42-year-old actor has revealed he suffered a “very intense health-related experience” that made him fear he would “never get his life back” just as he landed the movie Sound of Metal.<\/p>\n
Speaking on the Podcrushed podcast, he recounted: \u201cAround the time of taking on Sound of Metal, I had a very intense health-related experience myself.<\/p>\n
\u201cI had to grapple with the grief but also the acceptance around that.\u201d<\/p>\n
He continued: \u201cMy body just, kind of, gave up on me.<\/p>\n
\n\u201cI was extremely exhausted, [and] I was hospitalized for a brief period. I just had to really try and retrain my strength. It was, like, building myself up from scratch. It was super scary and intense and quite prolonged, actually.\u201d<\/p>\n
\nHe explained that he felt a \u201cdeep kind of grief and fear and terror” in the hospital.<\/p>\n
\nRiz recalled: \u201cFor a minute, I was, like, \u2018Am I ever going to get my life back?\u2019 It really wasn\u2019t clear. Something very silent and very intense had happened to me, and I wasn\u2019t getting better quickly.\u201d<\/p>\n
\nHowever, he also felt “tremendous liberation and gratitude and acceptance”.<\/p>\n
\nHe explained: “Someone told me that cancer patients, once they\u2019ve recovered, say, \u2018You know what? I\u2019m so glad I\u2019m better, but I wish I could bottle that slightly zen-like gratitude I had when I lost everything.\u2019 I always think that when you\u2019re brought to your knees, you\u2019re halfway to praying.<\/p>\n
\n\u201cYou\u2019re humbled in that way when something is taken away from you, you become even more acutely aware of everything you have.\u201d<\/p>\n
\nAlthough it was a struggle to lose “control” over his body, in “a strange way”, he felt “at peace” and “content”.<\/p>\n
\nHe explained: \u201cYou realise, like, you don\u2019t control anything, man.<\/p>\n
\n\u201cYou don\u2019t control a single thing. You don\u2019t even control your body. Then, in moments of trippy clarity in the darkness, I realised [that] everything you have is a gift. .. In a strange way, I never felt more grateful, more at peace, more content than when I felt I was going to lose my whole life.\u201d<\/p>\n
\nSound of Metal tells the story of a heavy metal drummer who loses his hearing, and Riz felt compelled to throw himself into telling the story.<\/p>\n
\nHe said: \u201cI was like, \u2018I need to tell this story. I need to tell a story for me [and] I need to make sense of this.’<\/p>\n
\n\u201cI think that\u2019s one of the greatest privileges that we get as storytellers.\u201d<\/p>\n
