The 60-year-old director \u2013 whose earlier work The Shape of Water won the Golden Lion at Venice in 2017 \u2013 addressed questions about AI at the film\u2019s official press conference on Saturday (30.08.25) afternoon ahead of its world premiere, when his $120 million monster movie, starring Jacob Elordi and Oscar Isaac will debut in competition for the festival\u2019s top prize.<\/p>\n

Revealing his new adaptation of Mary Shelley<\/a>\u2019s novel is about humanity, imperfection and power rather than technology, Guillermo said: \u201cIt\u2019s not intended as a metaphor for that (the dangers of AI.) <\/p>\n

\u201cWe live in a time of terror and intimidation, certainly. <\/p>\n

\u201cAnd there\u2019s no more urgent task than to remain, in a time where everything is pushing towards a bipolar understanding of our humanity. <\/p>\n

\n\u201cThe movie tries to show imperfect characters and the right we have to remain imperfect, and the right we have to understand each other under the most oppressive circumstances.\u201d<\/p>\n

\nHe added with a smile: \u201cI\u2019m not afraid of artificial intelligence. I\u2019m afraid of natural stupidity.\u201d<\/p>\n

\nIn the new version of Frankenstein, Jacob plays the creature locked in conflict with his creator Victor Frankenstein, played by Oscar. <\/p>\n

\nGuillermo added he imagined the film not as a conventional horror story but as a layered family drama. He said: \u201cI\u2019ve been following the creature since I was a kid. <\/p>\n

\n\u201cI waited for the movie to be done in the right conditions, both creatively in terms of achieving the scope to make it different, and to make it at a scale that you could reconstruct the whole world. I\u2019m in postpartum depression now that it\u2019s finished.\u201d<\/p>\n

\nJacob was asked at the same event who in society he views as monstrous. <\/p>\n

\nHe answered: \u201cMen in suits.\u201d <\/p>\n

\nGuillermo interjected: \u201cVery well tailored (suits.)\u201d<\/p>\n

\nOscar was also at the event and recalled his first conversations with Guillermo about taking the role of Victor. <\/p>\n

\nHe said: \u201cI can\u2019t believe that I\u2019m here right now. I can\u2019t believe we got to this place from two years ago, sitting at (Guillermo\u2019s) table eating Cuban pork and talking about our fathers and our lives, to him saying, \u2018I want you to be Victor,\u2019 then not really being sure if it was true or if I was just dreaming. It just seemed like such a pinnacle.\u201d<\/p>\n
