Matt Lauer<\/strong><\/a> was fired from Today<\/em><\/a> amid a sexual misconduct scandal \u2014 but where is he now after being forced out of the public eye?<\/p>\n

Lauer joined Today<\/em> in 1994 and became one of the hosts three years later. He was fired from the show<\/a> in November 2017 after being accused of sexual misconduct. A female staffer claimed that Lauer acted inappropriately when they covered the Winter Olympics in Sochi, Russia, three years earlier. Hoda Kotb <\/strong>and Savannah Guthrie<\/strong> announced his firing on-air and went on to take his place as the show\u2019s cohosts.<\/p>\n

\u201cI have made no public comments on the many false stories from anonymous or biased sources that have been reported about me over these past several months. I remained silent in an attempt to protect my family from further embarrassment and to restore a small degree of the privacy they have lost,\u201d Lauer said in a statement to The Washington Post<\/em> in 2018. \u201cBut defending my family now requires me to speak up. I fully acknowledge that I acted inappropriately as a husband, father and principal at NBC.\u201d<\/p>\n

He continued: \u201cHowever I want to make it perfectly clear that any allegations or reports of coercive, aggressive or abusive actions on my part, at any time, are absolutely false.\u201d<\/p>\n

Amid the fallout, Lauer\u2019s then-wife, Annette Roque,<\/strong> filed for divorce in July 2019. The pair, who share three kids, have since finalized the proceedings and Lauer has been dating Shamin Abas<\/strong> amid a possible public return<\/a>.<\/p>\n

\u201cThey\u2019re very much on,\u201d a source exclusively told Us Weekly<\/em> in 2024. \u201cHe wants to show that he\u2019s in a stable relationship. He\u2019s not a playboy. He has a stable life.\u201d<\/p>\n

The insider said Lauer is focused on \u201cbuilding the foundation for a comeback<\/a>.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cHe\u2019s not going off into the sunset,\u201d the source added. \u201cHe is on good terms with his kids, which was the most important thing for him. This was not always the case post-divorce but now he\u2019s good with the kids.\u201d<\/p>\n

In fact, on the morning I was falsely accused of rape, and before I could even issue a statement, some journalists were already calling my accuser \u2018brave\u2019 and \u2018courageous,’\u201d he continued. \u201cI was also disappointed, but not surprised, that Ronan Farrow\u2019s overall reporting faced so little scrutiny.\u201d<\/p>\n

Farrow, for his part, slammed Lauer\u2019s comments about his reporting being \u201ctoo good\u201d to be true, writing via X at the time, \u201cAll I\u2019ll say on this is that Matt Lauer is just wrong. After a break from the spotlight, a source told Us<\/em> that Lauer was \u201cstill clamoring for a comeback<\/a>\u201d and he \u201cno longer feels\u201d shame about the scandal. Two years later, another insider confirmed Lauer hadn\u2019t ruled out a TV return.<\/p>\n

\u201cHe\u2019s started to talk to people,\u201d a source shared. \u201cHe\u2019s planning his next act, still very upset with how he was portrayed, and still feels like he was the victim.\u201d<\/p>\n
