Rory McIlroy<\/strong><\/a> gave his honest assessment of Carlos Alcaraz<\/strong><\/a>\u2019s dramatic new hairstyle, which has dominated conversation at the 2025 US Open.<\/span><\/p>\n

McIlroy, 36, paid a visit to Alcaraz, 22, on the practice courts<\/a> at the USTA Billie Jean King National Tennis Center in New York City on Monday, August 25, before the Spanish tennis star\u2019s first round match against American player Reilly Opelka<\/strong>.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

The 2025 Masters champion rubbed Alcaraz\u2019s newly buzzed head and asked, \u201cWhy this?\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cJust got a haircut that I struggled with,\u201d Alcaraz explained to McIlroy. \u201cI mean, I had to start fresh.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

McIlroy, who recently shaved his own head<\/a>, said, \u201cI like it. It\u2019s good. It\u2019s a good look.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

Hours later, McIlroy was inside Arthur Ashe Stadium to watch Alcaraz defeat Opelka in straight sets, 6-4, 7-5, 6-4.<\/span><\/p>\n

After the match, Alcaraz provided more details about how his divisive new haircut came to be.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cI felt like my hair was really long,\u201d he told reporters. \u201cBefore the tournament, I just really wanted to get a haircut. Suddenly, my brother misunderstood the machine. He just cut it and the only way to fix [was] to shave it off.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

Alcaraz added, \u201cTo be honest, it\u2019s not that bad.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

Unfortunately for Alcaraz, not everybody felt the same way.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

When American tennis star Frances Tiafoe<\/strong> was asked about Alcaraz\u2019s buzz cut, he had no problem letting his opinion be known.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cYeah, it\u2019s horrible,\u201d Tiafoe, 27, told Tennis Channel<\/a> on Monday. \u201cIt\u2019s terrible.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

Tiafoe continued. \u201cI don\u2019t know who told him that it\u2019s good. I don\u2019t know who told him to do that, but it\u2019s terrible. From a guy who gets haircuts week in, week out, and prides myself on good haircuts, it\u2019s horrendous. At the end of the day, it\u2019s Carlos, and that\u2019s my guy. But yeah, he needs to get with me. He needs to get with me for sure.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

While Tiafoe admittedly didn\u2019t love the style, he joked that Alcaraz\u2019s haircut will make him \u201cmore aerodynamic.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

Tiafoe revealed that Alcaraz\u2019s coach, Juan Carlos Ferrero<\/strong>, said the buzz cut had already improved Alcaraz\u2019s game.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n
