\t\t<\/p>\n Erik Menendez<\/strong><\/a> will remain in jail for the time being. <\/p>\n 36 years and one day after he and his brother Lyle<\/strong><\/a> killed their parents, Erik <\/strong>participated in a 10-hour parole hearing to determine if he \u201cwould pose an unreasonable risk to society if released,\u201d according to ABC<\/a>.<\/p>\n Commissioner Robert Barton<\/strong> noted that the crime \u201cshowed a lack of empathy and reason,\u201d but the board ultimately decided to deny parole for a different reason. <\/p>\n Keep reading to find out more\u2026<\/em><\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n \u201cContrary to your supporters\u2019 beliefs, you have not been a model prisoner, and frankly, we find that a little disturbing,\u201d Barton <\/strong>said during the hearing.<\/p>\n Barton<\/strong> said that Erik<\/strong>\u2018s behavior in prison is the \u201cprimary reason for this denial.\u201d Among the issues that were noted were Erik<\/strong>\u2018s alleged \u201cinappropriate behavior with visitors, drug smuggling, misuse of state computers and violence incidents,\u201d plus that he was \u201cillegally using cellphones while leading rehabilitative groups.\u201d<\/p>\n The board ultimately believes that Erik <\/strong>poses a risk to public safety if he\u2019s released from prison. He\u2019ll have another parole hearing in three years.<\/p>\n \u201cYou have two options: one is to have a pity party \u2026 and then you become a self-fulfilling prophecy, probably not getting granted [parole] next time. Or you can take to heart what we discussed. I hope that the people that are out there supporting you continue to motivate you,\u201d Barton <\/strong>said.<\/p>\n Lyle<\/strong>\u2018s parole hearing is on Friday.<\/p>\n Erik<\/strong>\u2018s relatives said in a statement: \u201cWhile we respect the decision, today\u2019s outcome was of course disappointing and not what we hoped for. But our belief in Erik remains unwavering and we know he will take the Board\u2019s recommendation in stride. His remorse, growth, and the positive impact he\u2019s had on others speak for themselves. We will continue to stand by him and hold to the hope he is able to return home soon. Tomorrow, we turn our attention to Lyle\u2019s hearing.
