Dwyane Wade’s family had their doubts about Gabrielle Union<\/p>\n
The 52-year-old Bring It On actress first started dating 43-year-old the retired basketball star in 2009 before getting married in 2014, but she has admitted her family weren’t immediately on board with the nine-year age gap.<\/p>\n
She told Michelle Obama’s IMO podcast: \u201cWhen I first met his family, the older sisters, who are closer in my age, immediately good.<\/p>\n
\u201cWe\u2019re good in the hood. But with [older sister] Tragil, because she has been the protector\u2026 She has been the watchdog.<\/p>\n
“She has been the gatekeeper to keep him sane and to keep him doing everything he needs to do without interference from anybody.\u201d<\/p>\n
\nGabrielle admitted Tragil and their mother Jolinda even questioned her on her motives before the tied the knot.<\/p>\n
\nShe recalled: “Before I got to the wife stage, like when we were just the very beginning, I think Tragil and his mom were like, \u2018What do you want? Who are you, you older lady? What do you want?\u2019<\/p>\n
\n\u201cI was like, \u2018Actually, we both just got divorced, so we\u2019re kind of in the same space.<\/p>\n
\n“‘I didn\u2019t have a kid at 20, I\u2019m still childless, and I\u2019m not racing to do that, so I\u2019m straight. I got my own bank account, so I\u2019m good. I just like him, we\u2019ll see where it goes.’ “<\/p>\n
\nGabrielle revealed how it took her “years” for both sides to really “earn” each other’s trust.<\/p>\n
\nShe said: \u201cIt took some years, really, to earn their trust and also for them to earn my trust so we could be comfortable equally.<\/p>\n
\n\u201cNow, it\u2019s easy, because we are all on the same side.<\/p>\n
\n\u201cBut you want that grace, you give that grace and you eventually receive that grace. But it\u2019s a learning curve, for sure.\u201d<\/p>\n
