Aubrey Plaza<\/strong><\/a> is speaking candidly for the first time about her late husband, filmmaker Jeff Baena<\/strong><\/a>, and the grief she\u2019s been living with since his passing earlier this year.<\/p>\n

It\u2019s been nearly seven months since Baena tragically died by suicide at age 47, and while the Parks and Recreation<\/em> star has returned to work and public appearances, she admits that the pain remains an ongoing challenge.<\/p>\n

Plaza recently joined longtime friend and co-star Amy Poehler<\/strong><\/a> on her podcast \u201cGood Hang,\u201d where Poehler compassionately broached the topic. \u201cYou\u2019ve had this terrible, terrible tragic year. You lost your husband. You\u2019ve been dealing with that and you\u2019ve been looking for all different ways to feel and find support,\u201d Poehler said. \u201cOn behalf of all the people who feel they know you and the people who do know you, how are you feeling today?\u201d<\/p>\n

Plaza didn\u2019t shy away from the question, choosing honesty about where she\u2019s at in her journey. \u201cRight in this very, very present moment I feel happy to be with you,\u201d she responded. \u201cI feel, overall, I\u2019m here and I\u2019m functioning and I feel really grateful to be moving through the world. I think I\u2019m OK. But, it\u2019s a daily struggle, obviously.\u201d<\/p>\n

The actress went on to describe her grief through an unexpected \u2014 yet striking \u2014 pop culture comparison. \u201cThis is like a really dumb analogy, and it was kind of a joke at a certain point, but I actually mean it \u2014 did you see that movie, The Gorge<\/em>?\u201d Plaza asked. \u201cIt\u2019s like an alien movie with Miles Teller, but in the movie, there\u2019s a cliff on one side and then there\u2019s a cliff on the other side and then there\u2019s a gorge in between and it\u2019s filled with all these monster people that are trying to get them.\u201d<\/p>\n

She continued: \u201cI swear, when I watched it, I was like, that feels like what my grief is like \u2014 or what grief could be like \u2014 at all times there\u2019s a giant ocean of awfulness that\u2019s right there and I can see it. Sometimes I just want to dive into it and be in it and sometimes I just look at it and sometimes I try to get away from it, but it\u2019s always there. It\u2019s just always there and the monster people are trying to get me, like Miles Teller<\/strong> and Anya Taylor-Joy<\/strong>.\u201d<\/p>\n

Baena, known for his work on indie films such as Life After Beth, Joshy, The Little Hours<\/em> and Spin Me Round<\/em>, was found at his Los Angeles home in January. He and Plaza had been together since 2011 but kept their marriage private until 2021, often choosing to let their creative collaborations speak for themselves.<\/p>\n

Following his death, Plaza and their families released a joint statement: \u201cThis is an unimaginable tragedy. We are deeply grateful to everyone who has offered support. Please respect our privacy during this time.\u201d<\/p>\n
