Our list includes a little bit of everything, from high-concept horror to 2025\u2019s most likely best-picture contenders\u2014including new work from Oscar favorites like <strong>Chlo\u00e9 Zhao, Luca Guadagnino, Yorgos Lanthimos, James Cameron, Paul Thomas Anderson,<\/strong> and <strong>Kathryn Bigelow<\/strong>. <strong>Kelly Reichardt<\/strong> has a new movie! So does <strong>Noah Baumbach<\/strong>! <strong>Richard Linklater,<\/strong> bless him, has <em>two<\/em>! Read on for a full preview of the best cinemas have to offer this fall, including our most anticipated movies being released from Labor Day to December 31.<\/p>\n<h2><em>Downton Abbey: The Grand Finale<\/em><\/h2>\n<p class=\"paywall\"><strong>Premiere Date:<\/strong> September 12<br \/><strong>Director:<\/strong> Simon Curtis<br \/><strong>Noteworthy Cast:<\/strong> Michelle Dockery, Hugh Bonneville, Paul Giamatti<\/p>\n<p class=\"paywall\">Those mourning the end of <em>The Gilded Age<\/em>\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.vanityfair.com\/hollywood\/story\/the-gilded-age-season-3-review?srsltid=AfmBOooNy8WgFC2LGhZGOZGOhuemi1AtZY-jDJASvTD7HSxx869AXobz\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">most recent season<\/a> won\u2019t have to stagger on, lost and abandoned, without <strong>Julian Fellowes<\/strong>\u2019s particular brand of prim social drama for too long. He\u2019s jumped back across the pond to write one final film, closing out the <em>Downton Abbey<\/em> saga that began with the TV series\u2019s premiere 15 years ago. We can expect some minor scandal to ripple through the lords and ladies of upstairs society, while quainter matters occupy those toiling away in the kitchens and sculleries downstairs. There will be corny jokes (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.vanityfair.com\/hollywood\/story\/dame-maggie-smith-oscar-winner-and-downton-abbey-star-is-dead-at-89?srsltid=AfmBOopWvRZFSNm3sYZX-lfZkuo559KJxUzgRi1Q4OCAWBpT-5girouN\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">dearly departed Maggie Smith<\/a> will be missed on that front) and cozy sentiment, and it will all feel good and silly. We\u2019ll maybe even cry a bit. Y\u2019know, <em>Downton<\/em> stuff. We can\u2019t wait. <em>\u2014Richard Lawson<\/em><\/p>\n<h2 class=\"paywall\"><em>The Long Walk<\/em><\/h2>\n<p class=\"paywall\"><strong>Premiere Date:<\/strong> September 12<br \/><strong>Director:<\/strong> Francis Lawrence<br \/><strong>Noteworthy Cast:<\/strong> Cooper Hoffman, David Jonsson, Judy Greer, Mark Hamill<\/p>\n<p class=\"paywall\">\u201cI was writing a kind of a brutal thing. It was hopeless, and just what you write when you\u2019re 19 years old, man,\u201d says <strong>Stephen King<\/strong> of this film\u2019s source material, the very first novel he ever wrote. As <strong>Anthony Breznican<\/strong> noted in his <a href=\"https:\/\/www.vanityfair.com\/hollywood\/story\/first-look-at-stephen-king-the-long-walk?srsltid=AfmBOooJTFj-DycOMoprY7MAD4F4vu8zUm6SLvvmP3gRDd0I7ynI1T3H\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">first look at the film<\/a>, King started the novel when American men were being killed in the Vietnam War at a rapid clip. Today, the story\u2014about a group of young men who sign up for an endless marathon in hopes of winning untold riches and the fulfillment of a single wish\u2014has a different resonance. \u201cIt\u2019s a metaphor for any sort of hard thing you\u2019re going through, whether it\u2019s depression or anxiety or heartbreak or whatever,\u201d Hoffman tells Breznican. \u201cSometimes in life, you want to stop walking, and that\u2019s a really dark thought. But the second you acknowledge that and come to terms with it\u2014and <em>then<\/em> keep going\u2014that\u2019s a really beautiful thing.\u201d <em>\u2014Hillary Busis<\/em><\/p>\n<h2 class=\"paywall\"><em>The History of Sound<\/em><\/h2>\n<p class=\"paywall\"><strong>Premiere Date:<\/strong> September 12<br \/><strong>Director:<\/strong> Oliver Hermanus<br \/><strong>Noteworthy Cast:<\/strong> Paul Mescal, Josh O\u2019Connor, Chris Cooper<\/p>\n<p class=\"paywall\">Mescal, O\u2019Connor, and Hermanus had to wait years to make this swoony drama\u2014which all three signed on for before Mescal and O\u2019Connor became movie stars, thanks to <em>Aftersun<\/em> (which also earned Mescal an Oscar nomination) and <em>Gladiator II<\/em> in the former\u2019s case, and <em>Challengers<\/em> in the latter\u2019s. The movie follows Mescal\u2019s Lionel and O\u2019Connor\u2019s David, a pair of music conservatory students in the 19-teens who find themselves embroiled in a passionate romance. \u201cDavid is vocal, David has ideas, David is wealthy. And Lionel is kind of just being overwhelmed by this person, but in a very slow-drip way\u2014taking a long time to quantify the impact of this moment in his life and this relationship,\u201d Hermanus told <strong>David Canfield<\/strong> for <em>VF<\/em>\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.vanityfair.com\/hollywood\/story\/history-of-sound-paul-mescal-josh-oconnor-first-look-awards-insider?srsltid=AfmBOoo-JTr8XYr11gbPwMYJxqOZtznRxBIfChK_iQZG9D9F5idFo99C\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">first look at the film<\/a>. \u201cThat\u2019s just relatable to me, I guess. We all have people who define us, but we don\u2019t realize they defined us until it\u2019s too late.\u201d <em>\u2014HB<\/em><\/p>\n<h2 class=\"paywall\"><em>Him<\/em><\/h2>\n<p class=\"paywall\"><strong>Premiere Date:<\/strong> September 19<br \/><strong>Director:<\/strong> Justin Tipping<br \/><strong>Noteworthy Cast:<\/strong> Marlon Wayans, Tyriq Withers, Julia Fox, Tim Heidecker<\/p>\n<p class=\"paywall\">That\u2019s a very all-over-the-place cast list, making for a film that\u2019s even more interest-piquing when you learn it\u2019s produced by <strong>Jordan Peele<\/strong>\u2014but not directed by him, even if the one-word title and creepy premise seems to align the film with Peele\u2019s features <em>Us<\/em> and <em>Nope<\/em>. This horror tale is set in the world of professional sports (its original title was <em>GOAT<\/em>) and directed by TV vet <strong>Justin<\/strong> <strong>Tipping.<\/strong> Wayans plays an aging NFL quarterback; Withers is his perhaps unwitting prot\u00e9g\u00e9. <em>\u2014HB<\/em><\/p>\n<h2 class=\"paywall\"><em>The Lost Bus<\/em><\/h2>\n<p class=\"paywall\"><strong>Premiere Date:<\/strong> September 19<br \/><strong>Director:<\/strong> Paul Greengrass<br \/><strong>Noteworthy Cast:<\/strong> Matthew McConaughey, America Ferrera<\/p>\n<p class=\"paywall\">A lot of people you\u2019ve heard of are involved in the <em>Bourne<\/em> series director\u2019s latest project: it\u2019s also produced by <strong>Jamie Lee Curtis<\/strong> and <strong>Jason Blum<\/strong>, and written by Greengrass and <em>Mare of Easttown<\/em> scribe <strong>Brad Ingelsby<\/strong>. Most of them also feel a close connection to the story, which is based on <em>Washington Post<\/em> writer <strong>Lizzie Johnson<\/strong>\u2019s book about the deadly 2018 Camp Fire.
