Then Watch This Scary AF Movie on Hulu Now"},"content":{"rendered":"<p> <br \/>\n<\/p>\n<div>\n<p>With all of the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.usmagazine.com\/celebrities\/stephen-king\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>Stephen King<\/strong><\/a> adaptations floating around Hollywood, it\u2019s understandable if you missed <em>The Monkey<\/em> when it was in theaters earlier this year.<\/p>\n<p>Originally published as a short story in 1980, <em>The Monkey<\/em> revolves around two brothers who discover a cursed monkey toy that their father purchased for them.<\/p>\n<p>Whenever this monkey is wound up to play the drums, people around it die in horrific ways. And despite multiple attempts, the monkey itself can\u2019t be destroyed.<\/p>\n<p>This film is currently the No. 1 movie on Hulu, and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.usmagazine.com\/watch-with-us\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Watch With Us<\/a> is sharing the three reasons you need to watch <em>The Monkey<\/em> this month.<\/p>\n<h3>The Film Has a Creepy Tone<\/h3>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"The Monkey - Hibachi Clip\" width=\"696\" height=\"392\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/81EinMIsFSk?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>The first thing that <em>The Monkey<\/em> gets right is that it feels like a Stephen King story. Not every King adaptation has managed to recreate the creeping sensation of impending doom that this film does. The early part of the movie with Hal and Bill as children is particularly effective because it\u2019s not as funny as some of the things that happen later.<\/p>\n<p>For a largely inanimate object, the monkey itself is genuinely unsettling. The story never tries to explain exactly what the monkey is or how this toy can cause so much death and destruction. But it <em>looks<\/em> evil, and there\u2019s tension every time it moves because that\u2019s the sign that someone is going to die soon.<\/p>\n<h3>\u2018The Monkey\u2019 Is Incredibly Well Cast<\/h3>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"The Monkey | Official Trailer | Hulu\" width=\"696\" height=\"392\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/KPxmK_ihDO8?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.usmagazine.com\/celebrities\/theo-james\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>Theo James<\/strong><\/a> leads the cast as twins Hal and Bill Sheldburn, and we\u2019ll get back to him shortly. The entire film has some great performances, but the most impressive was <strong>Christian Convery <\/strong>as young Hal and Bill. Convery was the star of Netflix\u2019s <em>Sweet Tooth<\/em>, and his dual performance in this movie suggests that he\u2019ll have a long career. Bill and Hal have such distinct personas that it\u2019s easy to forget that you\u2019re not looking at two actors. It\u2019s the same kid, and each of his characters gets a different response from the audience. We sympathize with Hal, but hate Bill for how incredibly mean he is to his brother.<\/p>\n<div class=\"link-related article link-related__with-thumb\">\n\t\t\t<a class=\"article__thumbnail related-ab-test\" href=\"https:\/\/www.usmagazine.com\/entertainment\/news\/best-horror-movies-to-watch-right-now\/\" target=\"_blank\" data-source=\"00\" rel=\"noopener\"><\/p>\n<figure class=\"article__figure\">\n<div style=\"padding-bottom:56.25%;\" class=\"ratio-based-placeholder\"><\/div>\n<\/figure>\n<p>\t\t<\/a><\/p>\n<div class=\"article__content\">\n<h3 class=\"article__title\">\n\t\t\t<a class=\"article__title-link related-ab-test\" href=\"https:\/\/www.usmagazine.com\/entertainment\/news\/best-horror-movies-to-watch-right-now\/\" target=\"_blank\" data-source=\"00\" rel=\"noopener\"><br \/>\n    <span class=\"related-badge\">Related: <\/span><span class=\"related-title\">8 Must-Watch Horror Movies to Stream Right Now<\/span><\/a><br \/>\n\t\t<\/h3>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<p>\n\t\t\tHorror is having a mini-renaissance in theaters in 2025, especially since Sinners is doing so well in theaters and delaying its inevitable leap to streaming. In the meantime, there are plenty of scary flicks to enjoy from the comfort of your own home via the most popular streaming services. Hulu, for example, has Oddity, a [\u2026]\t\t<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p>James carries a lot of the film on his shoulders as the adult versions of Hal and Bill, with a heavier emphasis on the former. Older Hal is overly cautious to the point where he has no one in his life to love, because he knows the monkey could take them away. Bill, on the other hand, is completely unhinged. He\u2019s even meaner in the present than he is in the past, and Bill gets an extended flashback late in the movie that explains why he\u2019s so different from his brother.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.usmagazine.com\/celebrities\/elijah-wood\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>Elijah Wood<\/strong><\/a> only has one scene in the film as Ted Hammerman, the man who married Hal\u2019s ex-wife (<strong>Laura Mennell<\/strong>) and the future adoptive father of Hal\u2019s son, Petey Shelburn (<strong>Colin O\u2019Brien<\/strong>). There isn\u2019t much room for Ted in this story, but Wood is extremely funny in the role. As for O\u2019Brien, he makes Petey the most human and relatable character in the movie. He doesn\u2019t know anything about the cursed monkey. Intriguingly, we never learn what happens to the first Petey. But given his run-in with the monkey, it was probably fatal. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.usmagazine.com\/celebrities\/tatiana-maslany\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>Tatiana Maslany<\/strong><\/a> doesn\u2019t share any scenes with her on-screen husband, but she is terrific as Lois Shelburn, the mother of Hal and Bill. The villain was originally introduced in Stephen King\u2018s 1986 novel It, which followed seven children who get terrorized by an evil entity in the form of a dancing clown. Throughout the book, readers were offered a glimpse into Pennywise\u2019s multiple reigns of [\u2026]\t\t<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<h3>It\u2019s a Darkly Hilarious Horror Comedy<\/h3>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Death Recap Scene - The Monkey (2025) | Movie Clip HD\" width=\"696\" height=\"392\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/tb4a8YSLUKY?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>You\u2019re going to see a lot of things in <em>The Monkey<\/em> that remind you of the <em>Final Destination<\/em> movies. The monkey can\u2019t physically kill anyone, but the worst of all possible outcomes happens to anyone it marks for death. There are some scary moments, but director <strong>Osgood Perkins\u00a0<\/strong>gradually ramps up the humor surrounding the deaths. That includes the off-screen demise of his character, Chip Zimmer. After the film offers a colorful description of what happened to Uncle Chip, Perkins shows perfect comic timing by revealing what\u2019s left of Chip\u2019s body at just the right moment.<\/p>\n<div id=\"news-block\">\n<div class=\"newsletter-form  \">\n<div class=\"newsletter-signup__success\" aria-live=\"polite\">\n<h3>Thank You!<\/h3>\n<p>You have successfully subscribed.<\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<\/div><\/div>\n<p><strong>Corin Clark\u00a0<\/strong>has a wordless cameo as a woman by a hotel swimming pool, and what happens to her is so wrong and so funny at the same time. James\u2019 reaction to the woman\u2019s fate is also amusing, and things escalate as the film heads towards its conclusion. Little touches like that weren\u2019t in the original short story by King. But they enrich the movie, and make it more than just a gore fest. Having said that, the finale of <em>The Monkey<\/em> is wildly over-the-top and takes the gore to a new level.
