Katy Perry<\/strong><\/a> is in on the joke.<\/p>\n

The pop star poked fun at the backlash she has received in recent months as she celebrated a sold-out show at Madison Square Garden in New York City on Monday, August 11.<\/p>\n

\u201cThey said, \u2018No way! MSG, it couldn\u2019t be done.\u2019 And I was scared too,\u201d she began a lengthy speech to the crowd during the latest stop of her Lifetimes Tour<\/em>.<\/p>\n

Perry, 40, then quipped that she was \u201cnot talking about a sold-out show\u201d before declaring, \u201cI\u2019m talking about the fact that I ate a hot dog from the corner!\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cI rolled the dice yesterday, and I loved it. Give me a jumbo with the onions,\u201d she continued.<\/p>\n

Perry went on to call Manhattan \u201cspecial\u201d \u2014 but also a \u201cbeautiful hot mess.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cI rolled into New York, and it smelled like New York City. And you know what I\u2019m talking about,\u201d she said as the audience laughed. \u201cIt was late at night. We got in from Philly, and there were drunk people vomiting on the same corner as people making out. That was New York City! And I loved it.\u201d<\/p>\n

Perry explained that she has been to the Big Apple plenty of times throughout her life but \u201cfinally understood\u201d its allure this time around.<\/p>\n

\u201cYou know why? Because New York City represents life \u2014 the highs, the lows, the in-betweens, everything that is messy, everything that is beautiful, and it sure as hell is not perfect \u2019cause perfection is an illusion,\u201d she added. \u201cAnd I understood it because I resonate with it so much, because one of my favorite words is authenticity. And you know what New York is? Authentic!\u201d<\/p>\n

Perry faced more criticism in April when she flew to space<\/a> on an all-female Blue Origin flight, which many critics blasted<\/a> as both costly and an abrasive PR stunt<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Later that month, Perry admitted to feeling like a \u201chuman pi\u00f1ata\u201d<\/a> while calling social media a \u201cdumping ground\u201d for hateful comments.<\/p>\n
