Kristin Scott Thomas says she has confronted the tragedies of her childhood head-on through her directorial debut My Mother\u2019s Wedding<\/p>\n
The British actress and filmmaker, 65, known for roles in Four Weddings and a Funeral and The English Patient, has carried profound loss since early childhood as aged five she lost her father, and at 12, her stepfather \u2013 both Royal Navy pilots who died in service. <\/p>\n
Now, after four decades in the industry, she has turned these personal histories into a semi-autobiographical drama.<\/p>\n
She told People about her My Mother\u2019s Wedding movie: \u201cI felt that it was time to reclaim my story. <\/p>\n
\u201cIf you read a profile on me, it will more often than not, I mean 99 percent of the time, say \u2018Tragedy struck\u2019 or whatever.\u201d<\/p>\n
\nKristin\u2019s film follows three sisters, played by Scarlett Johansson, Sienna Miller, and Emily Beecham, who reunite for their mother\u2019s third wedding in the English countryside. <\/p>\n
\nThe actress herself stars as the twice-widowed mother.<\/p>\n
\nCo-writing the screenplay with her husband John Micklethwait, whom she married in 2024, Kristin says she sought to transform catastrophe into something positive. <\/p>\n
\nShe added: \u201cYes, catastrophe at a young age can be disastrous, and sometimes it just makes you who you are.\u201d<\/p>\n
\nJohn, who has been editor-in-chief of Bloomberg since 2015, helped make the narrative accessible. Kristin said: \u201cHe\u2019s very good at organising and editing and making a kind of narrative out of a string of events. And so that\u2019s what we did and it was really fun.\u201d<\/p>\n
\nKristin also highlighted a pivotal line from the film\u2019s emotional climax in her interview saying: \u201c\u2018Let go of the children you were, and pay attention to the children you have\u2019 \u2013\u00a0that is what growing up is. <\/p>\n
\n\u201cIt\u2019s much easier to do once you have children because your perspective shifts.\u201d<\/p>\n
\nA mother to three kids \u2013 Hannah, 37, Joseph, 34, and 24-year-old George \u2013 with her ex-husband Fran\u00e7ois Olivennes, Kristin also clarified the daughters\u2019 relationship in the film was not modelled on her own family. <\/p>\n
\nInstead, it drew on broader observations of sibling dynamics. <\/p>\n
\nShe said: \u201cHow siblings react and spin off each other, and how one thing said can get completely out of control and turn into something else (is what it is about.)<\/p>\n
\n\u201cLife observation, listening, hearing people, all of those things contribute.\u201d<\/p>\n
