Language referring to both impeachments\u2014from 2019 over his dealings with Ukraine and 2021 following the January 6 attack on the Capitol\u2014was altered.<\/p>\n<p>Previously, the display mentioned Trump\u2019s 2021 incitement charge being based on \u201crepeated \u2018false statements\u2019 challenging the 2020 election results\u201d and giving a speech that \u201cencouraged \u2014 and foreseeably resulted in \u2014 imminent lawless action at the Capitol.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paywall\">Now, the label reads: \u201cOn Jan. 13, 2021, Donald Trump became the first president to be impeached twice. The charge was incitement of insurrection based on his challenge of the 2020 election results and on his speech on Jan. 6. Because Trump\u2019s term ended on Jan. 20, he became the first former president tried by the Senate. The decision to remove the language was made by the Smithsonian\u2019s Board of Regents, the governing body of the institution. The group had committed to reviewing its content in response to pressure from the Trump administration. Trump, as <em>The New York Times<\/em> <a data-offer-url=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2025\/08\/08\/arts\/design\/smithsonian-trump-impeachment-jan-6.html\" class=\"external-link\" data-event-click=\"{&quot;element&quot;:&quot;ExternalLink&quot;,&quot;outgoingURL&quot;:&quot;https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2025\/08\/08\/arts\/design\/smithsonian-trump-impeachment-jan-6.html&quot;}\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2025\/08\/08\/arts\/design\/smithsonian-trump-impeachment-jan-6.html\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">reports<\/a>, \u201chas called for what he has described as a more positive framing of the country\u2019s history in Smithsonian museums.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paywall\">The administration\u2019s increased scrutiny of the Smithsonian Institution\u2014a museum, education, and research complex of 21 museums and the National Zoological Park, which <a href=\"https:\/\/www.si.edu\/newsdesk\/about\/stats\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">saw<\/a> almost 17 million visitors in 2024\u2014has been happening for months.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paywall\">In March, Trump signed an Executive Order <a href=\"https:\/\/www.vanityfair.com\/news\/story\/trump-improper-ideology-order-smithsonian?srsltid=AfmBOooO_6lWphaZ9Zy3zjzM8C_HuFrIxbitqmnWVi_zZr0sEo6tCBxA\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">targeting<\/a> the Smithsonian. The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.whitehouse.gov\/presidential-actions\/2025\/03\/restoring-truth-and-sanity-to-american-history\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">order<\/a>, titled \u201cRestoring Truth And Sanity To American History,\u201d accused the network of museums of being a part of a \u201crevisionist movement\u201d that \u201cseeks to undermine the remarkable achievements of the United States by casting its founding principles and historical milestones in a negative light.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paywall\">\u201cOnce widely respected as a symbol of American excellence and a global icon of cultural achievement, the Smithsonian Institution has, in recent years, come under the influence of a divisive, race-centered ideology,\u201d the order reads. \u201cThis shift has promoted narratives that portray American and Western values as inherently harmful and oppressive.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paywall\">The move called on Vice President <strong>JD Vance<\/strong>, who has a spot on the Smithsonian\u2019s board, along with the Director of the Office of Management and Budget, to work with Congress to prohibit expenditures on exhibitions or programs that \u201cdegrade shared American values, divide Americans by race or promote ideologies inconsistent with federal law.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p><br \/>\n<br \/><a href=\"https:\/\/www.vanityfair.com\/news\/story\/smithsonian-minimizes-trump-impeachment-display\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Source link <\/a><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>On Friday, the Smithsonian National Museum of American History removed some of the language used to explain President Donald Trump\u2019s historic two impeachments, softening the description amid the institution\u2019s ongoing review of its content to address increased scrutiny from the administration.
