On Friday, the Smithsonian National Museum of American History removed some of the language used to explain President Donald Trump<\/strong>\u2019s historic two impeachments, softening<\/a> the description amid the institution\u2019s ongoing review of its content to address increased scrutiny<\/a> from the administration. Language referring to both impeachments\u2014from 2019 over his dealings with Ukraine and 2021 following the January 6 attack on the Capitol\u2014was altered.<\/p>\n Previously, the display mentioned Trump\u2019s 2021 incitement charge being based on \u201crepeated \u2018false statements\u2019 challenging the 2020 election results\u201d and giving a speech that \u201cencouraged \u2014 and foreseeably resulted in \u2014 imminent lawless action at the Capitol.\u201d<\/p>\n Now, the label reads: \u201cOn Jan. 13, 2021, Donald Trump became the first president to be impeached twice. The charge was incitement of insurrection based on his challenge of the 2020 election results and on his speech on Jan. 6. Because Trump\u2019s term ended on Jan. 20, he became the first former president tried by the Senate. He was acquitted on Feb. 13, 2021.\u201d<\/p>\n In the section that addresses Trump\u2019s first impeachment, the Smithsonian added the word \u201calleged\u201d to the following line: \u201cThe charges focused on the president\u2019s alleged solicitation of foreign interference in the 2020 presidential election and defiance of Congressional subpoenas.\u201d<\/p>\n
