His parents\u2019 pet store just outside Miami was regularly <a data-offer-url=\"https:\/\/www.vice.com\/en\/article\/my-familys-war-with-animal-activists\/\" class=\"external-link\" data-event-click=\"{&quot;element&quot;:&quot;ExternalLink&quot;,&quot;outgoingURL&quot;:&quot;https:\/\/www.vice.com\/en\/article\/my-familys-war-with-animal-activists\/&quot;}\" href=\"https:\/\/www.vice.com\/en\/article\/my-familys-war-with-animal-activists\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">protested<\/a> by animal advocacy groups, which his mother leaned into. \u201cIt was actually going to go out of business and the protests resurrected it because she turned it into a circus,\u201d Jackson recalls. \u201cShe had counterprotestors.\u201d As a child, Jackson says, he saw the \u201clong game\u201d in gaining and maintaining attention. His mother used to say, \u201cYou\u2019ll never starve in America if you\u2019re shameless. One such situation was when he was put on retainer to help <strong>Maya Henry,<\/strong> Liam Payne\u2019s ex-fianc\u00e9e, with promotion for her book. The outlet immediately drew outrage and ethical questions after publishing and then deleting <a data-offer-url=\"https:\/\/www.hollywoodreporter.com\/news\/general-news\/tmz-liam-payne-death-photos-breaking-taboos-drawing-condemnation-1236033681\/.\" class=\"external-link\" data-event-click=\"{&quot;element&quot;:&quot;ExternalLink&quot;,&quot;outgoingURL&quot;:&quot;https:\/\/www.hollywoodreporter.com\/news\/general-news\/tmz-liam-payne-death-photos-breaking-taboos-drawing-condemnation-1236033681\/.&quot;}\" href=\"https:\/\/www.hollywoodreporter.com\/news\/general-news\/tmz-liam-payne-death-photos-breaking-taboos-drawing-condemnation-1236033681\/.\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">photos<\/a> showing portions of Payne\u2019s body, while reporting on the incident.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paywall\">In that circumstance, anything Henry said \u201cwas going to be taken out of context right away,\u201d Jackson argues. \u201cThe fans are the fans.\u201d His role in managing that crisis mostly included \u201cbatting down reporters,\u201d and eventually providing a <a data-offer-url=\"https:\/\/www.rollingstone.com\/music\/music-news\/liam-payne-maya-henry-statement-1235261822\/\" class=\"external-link\" data-event-click=\"{&quot;element&quot;:&quot;ExternalLink&quot;,&quot;outgoingURL&quot;:&quot;https:\/\/www.rollingstone.com\/music\/music-news\/liam-payne-maya-henry-statement-1235261822\/&quot;}\" href=\"https:\/\/www.rollingstone.com\/music\/music-news\/liam-payne-maya-henry-statement-1235261822\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">statement<\/a> to a prominent outlet, in this case <em>Rolling Stone<\/em>, to \u201ctry to change the narrative.\u201d When reflecting on the crisis, Jackson says it was the \u201chardest thing\u201d he\u2019s dealt with throughout his career, given Henry and Payne\u2019s complicated relationship.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paywall\">Even considering the hard work that goes into managing crises for high-profile clients, Jackson torched the celebrity PR firms that are risk-averse and decide to drop clients who enter into a crisis situation, calling the move \u201cunethical.\u201d Jackson argues that you shouldn\u2019t \u201cconsider yourself a publicist if you can\u2019t handle a crisis.\u201d Celebrities spend a significant amount of money on their PR team, and \u201cthe second they have a scandal, get out of town? I think that\u2019s really fucked up,\u201d he continued.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paywall\">Meanwhile, he argues that publicists at large firms are \u201cobsessed with control,\u201d rather than \u201ctheir clients\u2019 best interests,\u201d adding that they failed to realize how the PR machine was changing around them. \u201cYou have more control when you surrender control,\u201d he says of the current media ecosystem. \u201cYou\u2019re going to control some fashion magazine five people read? You can\u2019t control TikTok. You can\u2019t control House Inhabit,\u201d Jackson says, referring to Instagrammer and Substacker <strong>Jessica Reed Kraus.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p class=\"paywall\">In a PR situation, \u201cYou get the card you\u2019re dealt and you have to play that card. You can\u2019t try to play a different card, otherwise you\u2019re just going to lose,\u201d Jackson says. Everyone would have forgiven her.
