Vive la France! The 2012 film version of Les Mis\u00e9rables<\/em> \u2013 the epic period musical with a star-studded cast \u2014 has taken its audience on an emotional and suspenseful journey long after its release.<\/p>\n

The Academy Award-winning movie is set in France during the 19th century and tells the story of Jean Valjean (Hugh Jackman<\/strong><\/a>) who has been hunted for the past decade by policeman Javert (Russell Crowe<\/strong><\/a>) for breaking parole. Valjean agrees to care for a child named Cosette (Amanda Seyfried<\/strong><\/a>) after her mother, Fantine (Anne Hathaway<\/strong><\/a>), dies. However, due to Javert\u2019s relentless pursuit, Valjean can never truly find the peace he is looking for.<\/p>\n

Despite Hathaway\u2019s Oscar win for her harrowing performance, the Princess Diaries<\/em> star wasn\u2019t the producers\u2019 first choice for the role of Fantine, she told the Hollywood Reporter<\/em> <\/a>in a December 2012 cast interview.<\/p>\n

\u201cThere was resistance because I was between their ideal ages for the part \u2013 maybe not mature enough for Fantine but past the point where I could believably play Cosette,\u201d she explained. \u201cAnd I did what I do when I really want a role: I got fiery and told my agent, \u2018Just get me in the room.\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n

Hathaway revealed she went to great lengths in order to portray the iconic character, including losing 10 lbs. before shooting<\/a> began on the film \u2014 and an additional 15 to portray a dying Fantine, who passed away in the first act of the movie after contracting a disease from sex work.<\/p>\n

\u201cI just had to stop eating,\u201d Hathaway explained to The Hollywood Reporter<\/em>. \u201cAll for a total of 13 days\u2019 shooting.\u201d<\/p>\n

Jackman also dropped 15 lbs. to play the heroic Valjean, he told THR<\/em> at the time. As his character progressed and became more successful, he eventually opted to gain back the 15 lbs. lost \u2013 as well as 15 more.<\/p>\n

The Wolverine<\/em> actor described the film shoot as a \u201charrowing emotional experience, but in the end, it was worth it.\u201d<\/p>\n

Jackman and Hathaway \u2013 along with the rest of the Les Mis<\/em> cast \u2013 reunited at the 2013 Oscars<\/a> to sing an ensemble performance of \u201cOne More Day.\u201d<\/p>\n
