Ethan Hawke<\/a>, and Luna, 13, whose father is the financier Arpad \u2018Arki\u2019 Busson. <\/p>\nOpening up about her busy life juggling her career and motherhood, Uma told The Sunday Times about her clear view on discipline when it comes to her kids: \u201cYou don\u2019t want to make a girl be obedient. It\u2019s not in her best interests.\u201d\u2019<\/p>\n
She made the comments during a Zoom interview from her rural New York home. <\/p>\n
Uma also spoke warmly about the joys of her childrem\u2019s spirited independence, adding” \u201cIt\u2019s kind of wonderful that they know the rules and don\u2019t always listen.\u201d<\/p>\n
\nShe added she reflects on her own youth when it comes to raising her family, adding: \u201cAs a mother, the freedoms I was given as a teenage girl are mind-boggling. <\/p>\n
\n\u201cI mean, it\u2019s unimaginable. Those were different times.\u201d<\/p>\n
\nUma described her teenage years as marked by independence and self-reliance during her interview with The Sunday Times,<\/p>\n
\nBy 15, she was earning money, navigating New York alone, and attending auditions with \u201cjust a Filofax and a quarter in case I got lost and needed to call someone\u201d, she revealed. <\/p>\n
\nHer upbringing had encouraged autonomy \u2013\u00a0as her parents, Robert Thurman and Nena von Schlebr\u00fcgge, were independent figures who allowed her to follow her path without restraint. <\/p>\n
\nShe said: \u201cBoth my parents did the same sort of thing when they were young. They were very independent. So I think there was a certain amount of being raised to be independent.\u201d<\/p>\n
\nUma shared her approach to parenting her own children, particularly when it comes to giving her eldest daughter, Maya, advice about her blossoming acting career.<\/p>\n
\nShe said: \u201cOh, she knows what she\u2019s doing. She went to Juilliard, thank God. She actually finished high school. <\/p>\n
\n\u201cAnd what I did learn (about mothering) is that nobody listens. So it\u2019s really about being there for them rather than telling them what to do.\u201d<\/p>\n
\nShe also spoke about allowing Maya freedom with her style, laughing her daughter has \u201cransacked\u201d\u00a0her iconic 1990s wardrobe, including the very first Prada dress she wore to the Oscars.<\/p>\n
\nWith her youngest now a teenager, Thurman described entering what she calls the \u201csunset period\u201d of motherhood. <\/p>\n
\nShe added: \u201cI\u2019m starting to think about what comes next, when I don\u2019t have to invest so much energy in shopping and driving and emailing teachers and all the things we do.\u201d<\/p>\n
