And more redemption opportunities.<\/p>\n<p>Like its top U.S. competitors, United plans to keep adding more high-end seats to its planes, from its Polaris suites to its domestic first-class recliners \u2014 not to mention the premium recliners found in the middle of its long-haul planes.<\/p>\n<p>Speaking on the company&#8217;s second-quarter earnings call Thursday, United&#8217;s chief commercial officer, Andrew Nocella, said the airline underestimated how much demand it would see for its premium economy product <a href=\"https:\/\/www.usatoday.com\/story\/travel\/flights\/todayinthesky\/2018\/11\/16\/first-look-united-airlines-shows-off-its-first-boeing-787-10-dreamliner\/2029196002\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">when it installed the mid-tier cabin<\/a> beginning in the late 2010s.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;We undersized the Premium Plus cabin,&#8221; Nocella told analysts. &#8220;And that&#8217;s a cabin, I think, that&#8217;s generating very good returns, and the one that we&#8217;ll probably lean more into going forward.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p><strong>Read more: <\/strong><a href=\"https:\/\/thepointsguy.com\/credit-cards\/which-credit-card-united-flights\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>The best credit cards to use for United flights<\/strong><\/a><\/p>\n<figure class=\"jsx-3874346954 tpg-figure\">\n<div style=\"padding-top:0\" class=\"jsx-2453190082 full-width-auto-height-image\"><\/div><figcaption class=\"jsx-3874346954 figcaption\">A United Airlines aircraft on the ground in Palermo, Sicily. ZACH GRIFF\/THE POINTS GUY<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p><a id=\"a-very-exciting-opportunity\" class=\"jsx-2362441780 anchor\"\/><\/p>\n<h2 class=\"jsx-2362441780\">A &#8216;very exciting&#8217; opportunity<\/h2>\n<p>United first <a href=\"https:\/\/www.usatoday.com\/story\/travel\/flights\/todayinthesky\/2018\/11\/30\/united-airlines-new-premium-plus-seats-sale-dec-3\/2161512002\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">debuted the seats as a distinct Premium Plus cabin in 2019.<\/a> It&#8217;s a way to offer a higher-end experience than coach but at a price point that&#8217;s more affordable than its Polaris business class.<\/p>\n<p>By 2023, the carrier had outfitted its entire long-haul fleet of planes with the intermediate premium offering.<\/p>\n<p>United&#8217;s Premium Plus passengers get access to some of the frills of business class, such as priority check-in and boarding. However, it&#8217;s not uncommon to see Premium Plus prices inch closer to business class than economy.<\/p>\n<h3>A hit with customers<\/h3>\n<p>Like other airlines that unveiled premium economy products in recent years, United drew immense interest from customers at a time when travelers have flocked to higher-end seats.<\/p>\n<p>Still, Premium Plus (shown in purple on the seat map below) represents a fairly small section of the carrier&#8217;s planes. UNITED AIRLINES<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Expanding that complement of premium seats, Nocella said, represents one of the biggest expansion opportunities ahead of the airline in the coming years, among its cabins.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Premium Plus is, I think, really a very exciting opportunity as a mid-range product,&#8221; he said Thursday.<\/p>\n<p><a id=\"an-overall-premium-emphasis\" class=\"jsx-2362441780 anchor\"\/><\/p>\n<h2 class=\"jsx-2362441780\">An overall premium emphasis<\/h2>\n<p>United isn&#8217;t alone.
