Lena Dunham<\/strong><\/a> probably won\u2019t love where this article is headed. \u201cMy least favorite thing would be if people were to try to Baby Reindeer<\/em> it<\/a>,\u201d she previously told Vanity Fair<\/em> of her semi-autobiographical new Netflix series, Too Much<\/a>,<\/em> \u201cbecause it would be impossible. It\u2019s so many influences, so many stories from friends. I would like 34-year-old women anywhere to be able to look at [Megan Stalter<\/strong>\u2019s leading lady] Jessica and\u2014while of course they won\u2019t all connect to every aspect\u2014see something of themselves in her.\u201d<\/p>\n But that\u2019s the tricky nature of basing art on a true story<\/a>. Once audiences learn what inspired Too Much,<\/em> it\u2019s impossible for them to ignore the bits of Dunham scattered throughout the 10-episode series. There are plenty of callbacks to Dunham\u2019s last major TV series, HBO\u2019s Girls<\/em><\/a>:<\/em> Rita Wilson<\/strong>, who played Marnie\u2019s mom on the first series, was cast as the mother of Jessica and her older sister Nora, portrayed by Dunham. Andrew Rannells,<\/strong> who once played Hannah Horvath\u2019s gay ex, Elijah, on Girls,<\/em> is Nora\u2019s estranged husband in Too Much.<\/em> Each episode of the new show also has a punny name riffing on a romantic comedy beloved by Dunham\u2014with titles ranging from \u201cNonsense & Sensibility\u201d to \u201cNotting Kill.\u201d<\/p>\n Jessica has those same British love stories in mind when she moves from New York City to London, where she falls for both the city and one of its inhabitants\u2014an indie rocker named Felix (Will Sharpe<\/strong>). But their blossoming romance doesn\u2019t stop Jessica from fixating on the end of her last relationship with Zev (Michael Zegen<\/strong>), who is newly engaged to an influencer named Wendy Jones (Emily Ratajkowski<\/strong>).<\/p>\n \u201cShe\u2019s in a love triangle with her past\u2014with someone who probably has her blocked on his phone and with her new boyfriend,\u201d Dunham told VF<\/em> in May. \u201cIt\u2019s about how hard it is to accept the joyful thing that\u2019s in front of you as you\u2019re seductively brought back to the painful thing that\u2019s behind you.\u201d Dunham herself went through a break up with New York<\/a> and a longtime boyfriend, Grammy-winning music producer Jack Antonoff,<\/strong> before going overseas to meet her now-husband: British Peruvian musician Luis Felber,<\/strong> who is a credited cocreator of Too Much<\/em>.<\/p>\n
