In an interview with Vanity Fair<\/em><\/a> this week, Squid Game<\/em> creator, writer, and director Hwang Dong-hyuk<\/strong> neither confirmed nor denied rumors swirling around a potential fourth, US-set season of the show<\/a>. But given the massive celebrity cameo at the end of the third season\u2014which was released on Netflix last week, a scant six months<\/a> after Squid Game<\/em> season 2<\/a>\u2014the streamer is planning some big changes for the smash hit\u2019<\/a>s next season.<\/p>\n Here\u2019s what we do know, so far\u2026 and if you want to remain completely unspoiled, click away now.<\/p>\n Cate Blanchett, US recruiter?<\/p>\n \u201cWhat\u2019s Cate Blanchett<\/strong> doing here?\u201d Vanity Fair<\/em>\u2019s Richard Lawson<\/strong> asked last week<\/a>, echoing Netflix subscribers worldwide. In the final scene of the bleak third season, we see the superstar in an LA alley, seemingly recruiting a man for a stateside iteration of the game. Does that mean Blanchett has entered into a deal with Netflix, in which her character will be expanded? So far, no such arrangement has been made public, so her appearance might be more along the lines of Harry Styles<\/strong><\/a> in Eternals<\/em><\/a>, a dangling thread that might never be picked up.<\/p>\n David Fincher, Squid Game USA showrunner?<\/p>\n Late last year<\/a>, Deadline reported that \u201ca new English-language Squid Game series is in the works at the streamer, with David Fincher<\/strong> coming on to develop it.\u201d However, Netflix has never made an official announcement regarding a fourth season, an English-language iteration, or a plan to hand the deadly game over to the Fight Club<\/em> director.<\/p>\n That said\u2026when speaking with VF<\/em>, show creator Hwang offered neither a correction nor a denial when asked, \u201cWhy did you have the series end in LA? Is it so that a rumored American spin-off by David Fincher can be made?\u201d Instead, he said, \u201cI wanted to convey that in this late capitalist society, the system remains strong, deeply entrenched, and powerful\u2014and that these kinds of games are still continuing in the US.\u201d Not a confirmation, but not a rebuttal, either.<\/p>\n But what about Mindhunter<\/em>?<\/p>\n As you likely recall<\/a>, Mindhunter<\/em>\u2019s Holt McCallany<\/strong> recently stoked hopes that Fincher\u2019s beloved true crime series might return, saying, \u201cThere is a chance that [Mindhunter] may come back as three two-hour movies.\u201d But \u201ca chance\u201d is also how they get hapless people to play the Squid Game, so let\u2019s not base our lives around the possibility that the series might return.<\/p>\n An American spin-off is definitely happening, though, right?<\/p>\n Good question. Speaking with The Hollywood Reporter<\/a>,<\/em> Hwang says, \u201cNothing has been said to me officially by Netflix about this. I\u2019ve only read it in articles myself as well.\u201d So if one is in the works, Netflix is playing things so close to the vest that not even the show\u2019s mastermind is aware.<\/p>\n Hey, wasn\u2019t there a Squid Game<\/em> reality show? Maybe that<\/em> will come back!<\/p>\n It\u2019s 2025, bro, and anything is possible, but I wouldn\u2019t hold my breath. Rumors of on-set chaos (and worse)<\/a> plagued the single-season reality show from 2023, with some contestants mulling legal action<\/a> due to an allegedly rigged and inhumane environment.
