While reflecting on their past collaboration during an appearance on Hot 97\u2019s Ebro in the Morning radio show, John, 46, tackled Kanye\u2019s fixation on his appearance.<\/p>\n
The crooner said: \u201cHe was very obsessed with me wearing sweaters. He was very obsessed with the sweaters, and he said I smelled like mashed potatoes. \u201cWhat kind of potatoes? Cheesy, garlic?\u201d<\/p>\n
\nWhen host Peter Rosenberg asked John if Kanye\u2019s remarks \u201coffended\u201d or made him \u201csad,\u201d John replied: \u201cAll of it makes (him) sad. All of it. Not for me, though, because obviously, I smell great.\u201d <\/p>\n
\nPeter agreed, confirming John \u201csmells fantastic\u201d.<\/p>\n
\n\u201cIt never affects me personally, but the whole story is sad,\u201d John added. <\/p>\n
\nHe went on: \u201cLike, seeing this guy praise Hitler, seeing this guy be this force of hate and vitriol and nastiness. Somebody who has made some of the great art of this century as an artist, as a performer, as a fashion designer. <\/p>\n
\n\u201cAll the things that he\u2019s done to make the world more beautiful and more interesting and then for him to be this now is sad. It\u2019s just sad.\u201d<\/p>\n
\nJohn also insisted he \u201cnever saw this side of (Kanye) that was obsessed with Hitler\u201d and had \u201cno idea\u201d the rapper felt this way. <\/p>\n
\n\u201cI have friends that I talk about politics with all the time; he was never one of them,\u201d John said.<\/p>\n
\nHe added: \u201cHe just never talked about it in conversation. What a time, what a time.\u201d<\/p>\n
\nAsked to describe the \u201cold Kanye\u201d with whom he worked on several tracks, John said: \u201cHe was full of so much energy and creativity and optimism.\u201d<\/p>\n
\n\u201cWe really believed we were starting a new movement in music. <\/p>\n
\n\u201cBeing a part of that was inspiring and thrilling. That\u2019s why it\u2019s sad now because we did amazing things together as a collective. <\/p>\n
\n\u201cI have no regrets because even though he\u2019s gone completely left now, I\u2019m so glad we did what we did together.\u201d<\/p>\n
\nThe pair collaborated on multiple songs early in their careers, with John\u2019s soulful style complementing Kanye\u2019s innovative production.<\/p>\n
