The series finale of Squid Game<\/strong><\/a><\/em> ends with a scene that seemingly implies a spinoff could be on the way and we have an update on those plans.<\/p>\n Back in October 2024, before season two or season three ever aired, we learned about plans that were in development<\/a> at Netflix. <\/p>\n After watching the finale, there seems to be a connection between that final scene and the reported future of the franchise.<\/p>\n Keep reading to find out more\u2026<\/em><\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n Keep scrolling for spoilers\u2026<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n Cate Blanchett appears as recruiter for Los Angeles games!<\/strong><\/p>\n The final scene of Squid Game<\/em> introduces us to Cate Blanchett<\/strong><\/a> as the recruiter for the American version of the game<\/a>, taking place in Los Angeles.<\/p>\n Cate<\/strong>\u2018s recruiter is seen playing a game of dajiki with a man in an alleyway, slapping him continuously the way Gi-hun was slapped by the recruiter in season one. <\/p>\n So, how could this be connected to the spinoff plans?<\/p>\n Deadline<\/a> reported last year that acclaimed director David Fincher<\/strong><\/a> was in talks to develop and direct an English-language spinoff series. This would mark the first Squid Game<\/em> scripted spinoff series, however, Netflix did release the unscripted competition series Squid Game: The Challenge<\/em> in 2023.<\/p>\n Fincher<\/strong> is best known for movies like Fight Club<\/em>, The Social Network<\/em>, and Gone Girl<\/em>, but Cate <\/strong>previously worked with him on The Curious Case of Benjamin Button<\/em>. They already have a friendship and working relationship!<\/p>\n Variety<\/a><\/em> shared a June 2025 update on the spinoff plans with sources saying that Netflix \u201chas no plans to announce a Squid Game<\/em> spinoff at this time,\u201d but that the streamer is \u201cconsidering next steps for the IP.\u201d<\/p>\n Sources also told THR<\/a><\/em> that the ending \u201cis not intended to set up any future stories \u2018at this time.\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n It doesn\u2019t sound like creator Hwang Dong-hyuk<\/strong> will be involved.<\/p>\n \u201cI think the story ended in a manner where it doesn\u2019t need a further story to be told. So I am not too interested in telling a story that continues on from the conclusion. If I were to do a spinoff someday, I think I would rather choose to go back and see what happened during that time gap [between seasons one and two]. But this is something that we are just tossing around, so as for when or how a spinoff might come about, it\u2019s still up in the air,\u201d he told THR<\/a><\/em>. <\/p>\n The creator previously explained why he ended the show<\/a> with season three. <\/p>\n<\/div>\n
