It takes a village to make a pop star \u2014 but the most irreverent new acts aren\u2019t above roasting their own winning strategists.<\/p>\n

Performers like Ren\u00e9e Rapp<\/strong><\/a>, Doechii<\/strong> and Role Model<\/strong> have seen global popularity thanks, in part, to their behind-the-scenes teams. In that way, they\u2019re like every artist before them. But in another \u2014 namely, the way they publicly make fun of their own advisers and handlers, often in song lyrics \u2014 they are very different.<\/p>\n

\u201cWristwatch, drip drop, labels want the TikToks,\u201d Doechii, 26, raps in her 2024 song \u201cDenial Is a River.\u201d \u201cNow I\u2019m makin\u2019 TikTok music, what the f***?\u201d<\/p>\n

In a way, she always was. Back in 2021, after her song \u201cYucky Blucky Fruitcake\u201d went viral on the platform, she captioned a video<\/a>, \u201cI can\u2019t believe my song is trending on TikTok.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tIf one musician kept Us talking throughout 2024, it was Chappell Roan. Roan is no stranger to the music industry, having signed her first record deal in 2015, but it wasn\u2019t until the 2023 release of her debut album, The Rise and Fall of a Midwest Princess, that she began to take the world by [\u2026]\t\t<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

In subsequent years, her songs \u201cWhat It Is\u201d and \u201cNissan Altima\u201d were similar social-first success stories, and she became even more active on TikTok. Then at this year\u2019s Grammys, she won Best Rap Album for Alligator Bites Never Heal<\/em>.<\/p>\n

The timeline is trippy: The thing Doechii criticized her team about in \u201cDenial,\u201d one of the lead singles off that album, may have helped her take home the top prize.<\/p>\n

Rapp, 25, has also turned annoyance with her handlers into super-meta creative fodder.<\/p>\n

\u201cMy manager called me, said, \u2018Where\u2019s the single?\u2019\u201d she sings in \u201cLeave Me Alone,\u201d the lead off her forthcoming sophomore album, Bite Me<\/em>. \u201cLeave me alone, bitch, I wanna have fun.\u201d<\/p>\n

So the new single is about being irritated with her team \u2026 for bugging her for a new single!<\/p>\n

Former Sony music exec Seth Schachner<\/strong> told Us<\/em> that Doechii and Rapp aren\u2019t the only ones experiencing this sort of tension with their teams.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe new music landscape is so different from the old one, some artists and managers can have a tough time understanding how to play it when they\u2019re trying to break new artists or promote new releases \u2014 especially as social media can be a more critical door opener than great music,\u201d he said. \u201cYou might be representing the next Beatles, and a partner may simply want to know how big their TikTok audience is without even listening to the music. [It\u2019s] understandable that some friction comes out of this.\u201d<\/p>\n

The most mind-bending success story of this new genre may be Role Model, 28, who generated buzz for his album Kansas Anymore<\/em> by creating a satirical TikTok alter ego and adversary, Saint Laurent Cowboy<\/a>.<\/p>\n

In 2022, the singer told GQ<\/em><\/a>, \u201cI\u2019ve posted my music on TikTok before, but I usually delete it. My label tells me to post [there]. I get it. If I was a label, I\u2019d tell artists that too. That\u2019s their job. TikTok isn\u2019t about longevity, though. TikTok is depressing.\u201d<\/p>\n

Depressing or not, Role Model\u2019s begrudging acquiescence to his label\u2019s request served multiple purposes: he appeased his managers, drove streams for his music and gave a virtual f***-you to those who forced him to do it.<\/p>\n

\u201cThat was 100 percent my choice,\u201d the singer said (while making a face that suggested otherwise) when asked about his digital evil twin last year on The Zach Sang Show<\/em><\/a>. \u201cIt was my
idea and I just wanted to have a second account to build community and get closer to the fans.\u201d<\/p>\n

Cohost Dan Zolot<\/strong> then asked what we were all thinking: \u201cWho is forcing you to say this?\u201d<\/p>\n

While he didn\u2019t call out his team directly, Role Model admitted that the social strategy was part of his album rollout. And once again, it worked.<\/p>\n
