And Watch This Great HBO Max Movie Before It Leaves Next Week (June 2025)"},"content":{"rendered":"<p> <br \/>\n<\/p>\n<div>\n<p>This week, HBO and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.usmagazine.com\/media-network\/hbo-max\/\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Max<\/a> are going to lose a handful of films, including some that may not have a streaming home after the end of June.<\/p>\n<p>One of those films is <em>RoboCop<\/em>, the 1987 film that\u2019s widely considered to be among the greatest sci-fi action movies ever made.<\/p>\n<p><em>RoboCop<\/em> delivers all of the action that movie lovers could possibly want, and it also offers a story that has depth, compelling characters, humor and heart. As much fun as it is to watch a sci-fi spectacle on the big screen, it can be rewarding to see different kinds of stories. Warner Bros.\u2019 recently released Mickey 17 is one of the sci-fi movies that focuses more [\u2026]\t\t<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<h3>\u2018RoboCop\u2019 Has a Surprisingly Powerful Story<\/h3>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"ROBOCOP [1987] Scene: The Dream\/Murphy Remembers.\" width=\"696\" height=\"392\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/PvPpktHJXhU?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>The setup for <em>RoboCop<\/em> seems obvious from the beginning. An ordinary cop in old Detroit named Alex Murphy (<strong>Peter Weller<\/strong>) is brutally murdered in the line of duty before being resurrected and rebuilt as RoboCop. Even describing it in that way sounds cheesy, but the movie successfully makes the audience care about Murphy as a man even after he\u2019s transformed into a cyborg.<\/p>\n<p>Screenwriters <strong>Edward Neumeier<\/strong> and <strong>Michael Miner<\/strong> deserve credit for making the story revolve around Murphy\u2019s internal quest to reclaim his humanity. But it ultimately came down to Weller to make that journey feel real on the screen. Weller projects warmth as Murphy and then seems believably robotic as RoboCop, both in the way he speaks and moves. Large portions of the film require Weller to emote with just his lower jaw and mouth \u2014 and he does it beautifully. By the end, the audience isn\u2019t just rooting for RoboCop to kick ass, they also want him to be Alex Murphy again.<\/p>\n<h3>This Movie Embodies the \u201980s in All the Right Ways<\/h3>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"RoboCop (1987) - Clarence Kills Bob Scene | Movieclips\" width=\"696\" height=\"392\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/svX9-fYMIQU?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p><em>RoboCop<\/em> is truly a product of its time, which is one of the big reasons why the 2014 remake couldn\u2019t recapture that lightning in a bottle. This is an R-rated action flick that goes beyond what many modern movies would depict on-screen, especially during Murphy\u2019s gruesome murder early in the movie. Predator: Killer of Killers may be a direct-to-Hulu animated anthology, but it\u2019s easily one of the best sci-fi movies of 2025. Admittedly, there hasn\u2019t been a lot [\u2026]\t\t<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p>Although the movie is set in the near future, everything about it screams \u201980s from the cutthroat corporate culture at OCP to the way the cops relate to each other. <strong>Ronny Cox<\/strong> deserves a special shout out as Dick Jones, the OCP executive who serves as the film\u2019s lead villains. Picture a more ruthless version of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.usmagazine.com\/celebrities\/michael-douglas\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>Michael Douglas<\/strong><\/a>\u2018 character from <em>Wall Street<\/em> and it still wouldn\u2019t be as cartoonishly evil as Dick Jones. Cox gets to be the corporate raider that everyone hated from the \u201980s, and it\u2019s almost impossible not to enjoy seeing him get what\u2019s coming to him.<\/p>\n<h3>The Film\u2019s Satire Is Sharp \u2014 and Incredibly Funny<\/h3>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"RoboCop (1987) - ED-209 Scene | Movieclips\" width=\"696\" height=\"392\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/TYsulVXpgYg?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p><em>RoboCop<\/em>\u2018s unexpectedly hilarious satire largely comes from director <strong>Paul Verhoeven<\/strong>, who brought the same comedic edge to <em>Starship Troopers<\/em>. Verhoeven also went on to direct the infamous <a href=\"https:\/\/www.usmagazine.com\/entertainment\/news\/charlize-theron-lost-showgirls-role-elizabeth-berkley-details-20152010\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><em>Showgirls<\/em><\/a> a few years after <em>RoboCop<\/em>, but even that film has found its audience decades later thanks to the director\u2019s signature touch. RoboCop\u2019s predecessor, the ED-209, is particularly amusing because it\u2019s both ineffective and horrifyingly lethal at a moment\u2019s notice.<\/p>\n<div id=\"news-block\">\n<div class=\"newsletter-form  \">\n<div class=\"newsletter-signup__success\" aria-live=\"polite\">\n<h3>Thank You!<\/h3>\n<p>You have successfully subscribed.<\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<\/div><\/div>\n<p>The most impressive aspect of <em>RoboCop<\/em> is that the film has truly hilarious moments without ever becoming a farce or a self-parody. For example, <strong>Kurtwood Smith<\/strong>\u2018s Clarence Boddicker has some very funny lines, but Smith also gives his character a real sense of menace. Boddicker also personally murders Murphy in the most extreme way possible.<\/p>\n<p>Even RoboCop himself gets some unexpected laughs when he uses his targeting system to shoot a would-be rapist in the genitals. The scene isn\u2019t played for comedy, and yet it\u2019s still funny. Many of <em>RoboCop<\/em>\u2018s greatest comedic bits are actually in the faux-TV footage intercut throughout the film. Those moments give the audience a chance to laugh and break the tension before the film throws them back into one of the greatest sci-fi flicks ever made.<\/p>\n<p><em>RoboCop<\/em> is streaming on <a href=\"https:\/\/play.max.com\/movie\/aca325cd-8b68-470f-abf9-86e15097fc70\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Max<\/a> until June 30.
