Have you ever dreamed of making it in Hollywood? If so, you have something in common with Barry Berkman (<a href=\"https:\/\/usmagazine.com\/celebrities\/bill-hader\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>Bill Hader<\/strong><\/a>), the protagonist of <a href=\"https:\/\/usmagazine.com\/media-network\/HBO-max\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">HBO Max\u2019s<\/a> acclaimed dramedy <em>Barry<\/em>. You might not have much else in common with him, though, as he\u2019s an ex-Marine hitman who drifts from place to place killing people for money.<\/p>\n<p>When Barry is assigned to kill the lover of a Chechen mobster\u2019s wife, he follows the young man to an acting class. Impacted by the emotional and human connection he observes among the actors, Barry decides to give up on his life of crime and pursue acting professionally. Sometimes, only one or two new scripted series debut in a single month. Fortunately, this quality over quantity strategy has led to many great series, including the recently released science fiction [\u2026]\t\t<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p>Most people\u2019s familiarity with Bill Hader\u00a0<span style=\"box-sizing: border-box; margin: 0px; padding: 0px;\">stems from\u00a0his time on <em>Saturday Night Live<\/em>, where he was recognized for his larger-than-life characters and comedic<\/span>\u00a0skills. In <em>Barry<\/em>, which Hader cowrote with <strong>Alec Berg<\/strong>, he\u2019s able to really delve into his dramatic capabilities. His character deals with PTSD from his time in the military, as well as crippling guilt and self-doubt. Barry Berkman is definitely an anti-hero, and many of his actions are deplorable \u2014 but you can\u2019t help but care about him despite everything.<\/p>\n<p>Hader is often the straight man throughout <em>Barry<\/em>, and it\u2019s a role he takes on to great effect. His awkward demeanor hides Barry\u2019s inner turmoil, and when the mask slips to reveal the deep rage inside of him, it\u2019s genuinely frightening.<\/p>\n<h3>It Has One of the Best Side Characters Ever<\/h3>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Barry Season 1 Trailer | &#039;It&#039;s A Job&#039; | Rotten Tomatoes TV\" width=\"696\" height=\"392\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/T2nSqBNk538?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>NoHo Hank (<strong>Anthony Carrigan<\/strong>), a Chechen mobster whose friendliness and positivity are incongruent with his criminal background, is one of the most entertaining characters in television history.<\/p>\n<p>Hank, whose real name is never revealed in the series, was originally meant to be killed off in the pilot, according to an interview with Hader. \u201cAlec and I said, \u2018We\u2019d be insane to kill that guy. He\u2019s so funny,\u201d the actor told <em><a href=\"https:\/\/uproxx.com\/tv\/barry-interview-bill-hader-season-2\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Uproxx<\/a>.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>That turned out to be one of the best casting decisions ever, because NoHo Hank\u2019s arc throughout the series is one of the most entertaining. From his deep desire to be friends with Barry to his growing relationship with Bolivian drug lord Cristobal (<strong>Michael Irby<\/strong>), there\u2019s something intensely lovable about NoHo Hank, who was clearly meant for a gentler life than the criminal one in which he lives. Carrigan makes the character both outrageously funny and painfully genuine, a rare feat which we\u2019ve seldom seen matched in other shows.<\/p>\n<p>Other standout cast members include\u00a0<strong>Stephen Root\u00a0<\/strong>as Barry\u2019s handler Monroe Fuches, <strong>Paula Newsome<\/strong> as Detective Janice Moss,\u00a0<strong>Sarah Goldberg<\/strong> as Barry\u2019s love interest Sally and\u00a0<strong><a href=\"https:\/\/usmagazine.com\/celebrities\/henry-winkler\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Henry Winkler<\/a>\u00a0<\/strong>as acting teacher Gene Cousineau.<\/p>\n<h3>\u2018Barry\u2019 Satirizes the Entertainment Industry Brilliantly<\/h3>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"One of my favourite scenes from the show &quot;Barry&quot;\" width=\"696\" height=\"392\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/ABc6QbiCt0Q?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>If you\u2019re someone who follows showbiz news, Barry\u2019s satire of the film and television world will crack you up. From the bizarre projects getting greenlit by random-seeming platforms \u2014 Barry\u2019s girlfriend Sally ends up writing for a show called <em>The New Medusas<\/em> on a streaming service known as BanShe\u2014 to the desperate ploys that actors resort to to reach for fame, <em>Barry<\/em> never fails to point out the absurdity of the entertainment world.<\/p>\n<div id=\"news-block\">\n<div class=\"newsletter-form  \">\n<div class=\"newsletter-signup__success\" aria-live=\"polite\">\n<h3>Thank You!<\/h3>\n<p>You have successfully subscribed.<\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<\/div><\/div>\n<p>Barry\u2019s acting teacher and mentor, Gene Cousineau, is self-absorbed to the point of idiocy, and he\u2019s alienated all of his former Hollywood colleagues with his diva-ish behavior. In this week alone, Netflix and Amazon Prime Video have fresh comedies that may get some big laughs.
