Rob Lowe<\/strong><\/a> celebrated reaching 33 years of sobriety by sharing an inspirational message with fans.<\/p>\n \u201c33 years ago today I found recovery and a tribe that has sustained me on my incredible, grateful journey,\u201d the 59-year-old Parks and Recreation<\/em><\/a> alum captioned a shirtless photo while taking a sunset swim in the ocean via Instagram<\/a> on Wednesday, May 10. \u201cMy life is full of love, family, God, opportunity, friends, work, dogs and fun.\u201d<\/p>\n He went on to share words of encouragement for those who are or know someone \u201cstruggling with any form of addiction,\u201d writing, \u201cHope and joy are waiting if you want it, and are willing to work for it!\u201d<\/p>\n The Outsiders<\/em><\/a> star\u2019s celebrity friends praised him in the post\u2019s comments section. \u201cWe are so proud of you. We love you so much,\u201d wrote Gwyneth Paltrow<\/strong><\/a>, while Kristin Chenoweth<\/strong><\/a> commented with two red heart emojis.<\/p>\n Lowe\u2019s youngest son, John Owen Lowe<\/strong><\/a>, 28, also congratulated his dad\u2019s accomplishment \u2014 while poking fun at his father\u2019s photo choice. \u201cProud of your recovery, opposite feeling about this selfie,\u201d he teased.<\/p>\n The West Wing<\/em><\/a> alum stopped drinking in 1990, one year before he and wife Sheryl Berkoff<\/strong><\/a> \u2014 with whom he also shares son Matthew, 30 \u2014 tied the knot. He previously credited his spouse for saving his life, telling Entertainment Tonight<\/em><\/a> in May 2021 that he decided to end his \u201c\u201980s run of wild boy craziness\u201d because of her.<\/p>\n \u201cShe was worth changing my life for,\u201d Rob added. \u201cAnd so I am really lucky that that happened to me. Maybe I had changed it on my own, maybe, but it\u2019s a big maybe. And just when I met her, I knew that if I could not make it with her, I definitely could not make it work with anyone else.\u201d<\/p>\n Rob\u2019s sobriety anniversary comes one month after he presented John \u2014 with whom he stars on the Netflix comedy Unstable<\/em><\/a> \u2014 with a five-year sobriety chip<\/a> on an episode of The Drew Barrymore Show<\/em><\/a>. \u201cI love you. Proud of you,\u201d he told his son before hugging him.<\/p>\n The emotional moment left John \u201cspeechless,\u201d as he quipped, \u201cI usually have a witty retort. I don\u2019t have one for that. That was very nice of you.\u201d<\/p>\n The 9-1-1: Lone Star<\/em><\/a> writer \u2014 who also appeared on the TV series The Grinder<\/em><\/a> and the film Holiday in the Wild<\/em> with Rob \u2014 previously opened about his own addiction struggles in April 2020. He marked his second year of sobriety<\/a> by posting a side-by-side photo of himself drinking a bottle of wine and his sobriety chart via Instagram<\/a>.<\/p>\n \u201cTwo years in and I am more grateful than ever to have a community of support and friends who continue to build me up and hold me accountable,\u201d John wrote at the time. \u201cMaking the decision to change your life is difficult at any age, but as a young person I hope that I can be a small example that it is possible and that things really do get SO MUCH BETTER.\u201d<\/p>\n
