Fans of Netflix true crime series Mindhunter<\/em><\/a> have been in limbo since 2020<\/a>, when show creator David Fincher<\/strong> gave a pessimistic interview about a possible third season. But according to star Holt McCallany<\/strong>, the series based on<\/a> the real-life origins of the FBI’s profiling program might eventually resume production\u2014but this time, it would be a series of movies instead of a TV show.<\/p>\n In the series, McCallany played FBI special agent Bill Tench, a character loosely based on the late agent, profiler, and author Robert K. Ressler. He was joined by Broadway star<\/a> Jonathan Groff<\/strong> as Holden Ford, the fictional counterpoint to Ressler colleague John E. Douglas<\/strong> and Anna Torv<\/strong><\/a>, whose Dr. Wendy Carr was based on researcher Ann Burgess<\/strong>.<\/p>\n In the years since the show went on hold<\/a>, all three have said that they’re regularly asked about the possibility of a third Mindhunter<\/em> season\u2014but so far, no news has emerged. But in an interview with CBR<\/a>, McCallany says \u201cI had a meeting with David Fincher in his office a few months ago,\u201d during which he learned \u201cthere is a chance that [Mindhunter<\/em>] may come back as three two-hour movies.\u201d<\/p>\n “I think it’s just a chance,” McCallany\u2014who also worked with Fincher on 1999’s Fight Club<\/em><\/a>\u2014 warned, noting the director’s notorious perfectionism<\/a>. “I know there are writers that that are working, but you know, David has to be happy with scripts.”<\/p>\n There’s also the time commitment for the series, which Fincher has previously said is immense. \u201cIt\u2019s a 90-hour workweek. It absorbs everything in your life,\u201d Fincher said in 2020. \u201cWhen I got done, I was pretty exhausted, and I said, \u2018I don\u2019t know if I have it in me right now to break season three.\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n According to McCallany, \u201cthe sun, the moon, and the stars would all have to align\u201d for the profiling team\u2014who we last saw in the jailhouse with Charles Manson, Ed Kemper<\/strong>, and David Berkowitz<\/strong> (also known as the Son of Sam), as well as on the ground investigating the Atlanta child murders<\/a>\u2014to reunite. The options on the cast expired five years ago, and Fincher (speaking of Manson!)\u201a is reportedly slated<\/a> to direct the sequel to Quentin Tarantino<\/strong><\/a>\u2019s Once Upon a Time\u2026in Hollywood.<\/em><\/p>\n But steadfast McCallany is still holding out hope. The movies\u2014like the series\u2014would be for Netflix, he says, a platform that in 2020 said that<\/a> the show might return \u201cin five years.”<\/p>\n \u201cSo I think that in terms of dates and logistics, it could all be worked out,\u201d McCallany says. “But it has to do, you know, with David really having the time and the inclination and being happy, you know, with the material. And, you know, that’s a big question mark.”<\/p>\n<\/div>\n
