Is Criminal Minds<\/em><\/a> about to kill off a main character following a surprise shooting?<\/p>\n

During the Thursday, June 19, episode of the hit Paramount+ series, Voit\u2019s (Zach Gilford<\/strong>) past came back to haunt him when a new serial killer popped up with his Sicarius spiders signature. This led to Voit facing off with his uncle \u2014 in deepfake form \u2014 but they ultimately weren\u2019t able to catch the unsub.<\/p>\n

The BAU weren\u2019t sure how to track down the criminal but he figured out a way<\/a> to find them instead. In the last scene of the episode, Tara (Aisha Tyler<\/strong>) and Rebecca (Nicole Pacent<\/strong>) were told they needed to visit the DOJ at his office. On their way to their car, they were shot at and Tara got injured protecting her girlfriend.<\/p>\n

It isn\u2019t clear whether Tara\u2019s injury is fatal. The shocking cliffhanger comes after JJ\u2019s (A.J. Cook<\/strong>) husband, Will (Josh Stewart<\/strong>), died earlier this season. Stewart, 48, previously had a recurring role as Will since 2007.<\/p>\n

Stewart raised eyebrows when he revealed in January 2024 that he would not be reprising<\/a> his role in future seasons of the show.<\/p>\n

\u201c[S]adly, my days of playing Will LaMontagne Jr. are over,\u201d Stewart wrote via X in response to a question about his future on the show. \u201cYou guys have been the absolute best.\u201d<\/p>\n

Cook, 46, was asked about reuniting with her<\/a> onscreen husband Stewart in a May episode. The actress confirmed Stewart wasn\u2019t on set for seasons 2 or 3 of Criminal Minds: Evolution<\/em>.<\/p>\n

\u201cPeople don\u2019t know this, I guess,\u201d Cook revealed to TV Line<\/em>. \u201cBut he wasn\u2019t coming back to the show. Our writers had to get very creative.\u201d<\/p>\n

Cook pointed to Will\u2019s past health scare, adding, \u201cRemember the cancer storyline that we wrote in [during Evolution\u2018s first season]? We so badly were like, \u2018We don\u2019t want [Josh] to think he\u2019s going to die,\u2019 we got so freaked out by it, that we pulled this scene [of Will collapsing]. That\u2019s how much we did not want Josh to leave us.\u201d<\/p>\n

The Criminal Minds creative team revisited the deleted scene<\/a> when it came time to kill Will off.<\/p>\n

\u201cOur brilliant showrunner [Erica Messer<\/strong>] was like, \u2018Oh my gosh, we have this scene that we never used,\u2019\u201d Cook recalled. \u201cErica Messer put the pieces of a really complicated puzzle together, and it worked. It\u2019s weird how it happened that way \u2014 but that just goes to show how much we just did not want any more pain to come to this family.\u201d<\/p>\n

After Will\u2019s shocking onscreen death, Adam Rodriguez<\/strong>, who plays Luke, weighed in on where the show goes from here, exclusively telling Us Weekly<\/em>, \u201cIt\u2019s not somebody you want to see die. It gave AJ, the actress, a chance to really demonstrate the level of talent that she has. Because I think she\u2019s a great actress and having this to play really gave her an opportunity to sink her teeth into something substantial.\u201d<\/p>\n
