Nothing gets WNBA fans into a lather quite like an on-court altercation<\/a>. Throw in Caitlin Clark<\/strong><\/a>, the league\u2019s most popular player, and you get a days-long story that transcends the women\u2019s basketball media sphere.<\/p>\n

The Connecticut Sun vs. Indiana Fever game on Tuesday, June 17, offered plenty of opportunity for controversy as multiple scuffles broke out. The first came in the third quarter when the Sun\u2019s Jacy Sheldon<\/strong> inadvertently poked Clark in the eye. Sheldon then bumped into Clark, though the contact may have been incidental.<\/p>\n

In the heat of the moment, Clark responded with a shove, leading to the Sun\u2019s Tina Charles<\/strong> and Marina Mabrey<\/strong> to both come over and bump into the Fever star. Clark, Mabrey and Charles all earned technical fouls for their actions, while Sheldon was issued a Flagrant 1 foul.<\/p>\n

That wasn\u2019t the end of it. In the fourth quarter, Sheldon attempted a layup on a fast break, only for the Fever\u2019s Sophie Cunningham<\/strong><\/a> to grab her by the head and force her to the ground. Teammates and coaches immediately got involved as a shoving match ensued.<\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tUPDATE: 5\/28\/25 at 10:54 a.m. ET \u2014 The WNBA completed its investigation into alleged racist comments made at the Indiana Fever vs. Chicago Sky game on May 17 and was not able to substantiate the claims. \u201cWe have investigated the report of racist fan behavior in the vicinity of the court during the May 17, [\u2026]\t\t<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

Lost in it all, the Fever won the game, 88-71, to earn a spot in the Commissioner\u2019s Cup championship game on July 1 against the Minnesota Lynx.<\/p>\n

The only ejections came after the second dust-up. Cunningham was issued a Flagrant 2 foul, which comes with an automatic ejection. Sheldon and the Sun\u2019s Lindsay Allen<\/strong> were also ejected after the officials deemed they escalated the fight.<\/p>\n

What Did The Teams Say After?<\/h3>\n

Neither team had kind words for the officials after, with Fever coach Stephanie White<\/strong> alleging that tempers began escalating in the first quarter.<\/p>\n

\u201cI started talking to the officials in the first quarter, and we knew this was going to happen,\u201d she said. \u201cYou could tell it was going to happen. So, they\u2019ve got to get control of it. They\u2019ve got to be better.\u201d<\/p>\n

Sun center Olivia Nelson-Ododa<\/strong> seemed to agree.<\/p>\n

\u201cObviously, there was a physical game tonight. I think when things aren\u2019t managed well to begin with that it tends to get out of hand,\u201d she said. \u201cI feel like a lot of stuff was escalating throughout the game, and that\u2019s what happens when you don\u2019t make the proper calls or officiate the game and manage it the right way.\u201d<\/p>\n

Sun head coach Rachid Meziane<\/strong> took exception to Cunningham\u2019s foul, which came after the Fever had already assured themselves of a win.<\/p>\n

\u201cWhen you are winning a game by 17 points, and you doing this \u2026 for me, [it\u2019s] a stupid foul,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n

When on-court incidents like this happen in the WNBA, one designated pool reporter typically speaks with the lead official. In this case, Chloe Peterson<\/strong> of the Indy Star<\/em> asked crew chief Ashley Gloss<\/strong> to explain each flagrant and technical foul, and each ejection.<\/p>\n
