Kelly was convicted<\/a> on racketeering and sex trafficking charges. <\/p>\n<p>He was sentenced to 30 years behind bars, which he\u2019s now serving concurrently with a 20-year sentence for a child pornography conviction.<\/p>\n<p>Now, in a bizarre twist, lawyers for Kelly are demanding his immediate release for safety reasons.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><noscript><\/noscript><img fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"683\" src=\"https:\/\/cdn.thehollywoodgossip.com\/uploads\/2025\/06\/GettyImages-1168903006-1-1024x683.jpg\" alt=\"Singer R. Kelly appears during a hearing at the Leighton Criminal Courthouse on September 17, 2019 in Chicago, Illinois.<span class=\"image-caption-credit\"> (Photo by Antonio Perez \u2013 Pool via Getty Images)<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Kelly\u2019s attorneys claim he\u2019s been targeted by an assassination plot, and he\u2019ll be murdered if he remains in prison.<\/p>\n<p>Not surprisingly, federal prosecutors have rejected Kelly\u2019s request for home detention as \u201cfanciful\u201d and \u201cdeeply unserious.\u201d <\/p>\n<p>They added that the filing \u201cmakes a mockery of the harm suffered\u201d by victims of the \u201cprolific child molester,\u201d according to the <em><a href=\"https:\/\/chicago.suntimes.com\/2025\/06\/16\/feds-slam-r-kellys-deeply-unserious-murder-plot-claim-ahead-of-friday-hearing\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Chicago Sun-Times<\/a><\/em>.<\/p>\n<p>Prosecutors argued that even if Kelly\u2019s lawyers could prove that he\u2019s in immediate danger, that still wouldn\u2019t empower the courts to release him from prison.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><noscript><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"841\" height=\"1024\" src=\"https:\/\/cdn.thehollywoodgossip.com\/uploads\/2025\/06\/GettyImages-156812425-841x1024.jpg\" alt=\"R. Kelly performs at MSG Theater on November 21, 2012 in New York City.  <span class=\"image-caption-credit\"> (Photo by Jason Kempin\/Getty Images)<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>\u201cUnfortunately, no court has the ability to enter an order freeing Kelly\u2019s victims from the prison that Kelly put them in,\u201d Assistant U.S. Attorney Jason Julien wrote Monday.<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-kelly-s-lawyers-say-he-s-been-hospitalized-after-overdosing-in-his-cell\">Kelly\u2019s lawyers say he\u2019s been hospitalized after overdosing in his cell<\/h2>\n<p>Kelly attorney Beau Brindley alleged that Kelly was taken to Duke University Hospital early Friday morning after feeling faint and dizzy in his cell.<\/p>\n<p>According to Brindley, hospital staff found blood clots in Kelly\u2019s legs and lungs and told him that he\u2019d suffered an overdose.<\/p>\n<p>Brindley maintains that the only drugs Kelly consumed were the ones given to him by hospital staff.<\/p>\n<p>According to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.tmz.com\/2025\/06\/17\/r-kelly-overdoses-rushed-hospital-alleged-plot-kill-him\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">TMZ<\/a>, during the ride to the hospital, Kelly heard a corrections officer complain, \u201cThis is going to open a whole new can of worms.\u201d<\/p>\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><noscript><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"768\" src=\"https:\/\/cdn.thehollywoodgossip.com\/uploads\/2025\/06\/GettyImages-1129054434-1024x768.jpg\" alt=\"In this handout provided by Cook County Sheriff\u00e2\u0080\u0099s Office, R.
