Back in 1997, a quartet of colorful creatures called the Teletubbies<\/a> were introduced to the world. Tinky Winky, Dipsy, Laa-Laa and Po entertained toddlers with whimsical songs and shared a message to \u201cLove Who You Are\u201d.<\/p>\n

The brand faced controversy in 1999 when the infamous Baptist evangelist (and well-known homophobe) Jerry Fallwell took aim at the series in an article titled \u201cParents Alert: Tinky Winky Comes Out of the Closet,\u201d which ran in in the\u00a0National Liberty Journal,\u00a0a promotional publication for his evangelical Liberty University. In the piece, he said of Tinky, \u201cHe is purple \u2014 the gay pride color, and his antenna is shaped like a triangle \u2014 the gay pride symbol.\u201d<\/p>\n

The gay press embraced Tinky in pieces in publications including the\u00a0Advocate<\/em>, Out<\/em>\u00a0magazine and the\u00a0Village Voice<\/em>,\u00a0in which columnist Michael Musto<\/strong> declared that Tinky Winky is \u201cout and proud\u201d and sends \u201ca great message to kids \u2014 not only that it\u2019s OK to be gay, but the importance of being well-accessorized.\u201d<\/p>\n
