Kilmar Abrego Garcia<\/strong> was flown back<\/a> into the United States from El Salvador on Friday to face federal criminal charges from President Donald Trump<\/strong>\u2019s administration after being wrongfully<\/a> deported in March.<\/p>\n The Maryland man is still detained\u2014this time at Putnam County Jail in Tennessee\u2014as the 29-year-old Salvadoran awaits his June 13 court date related to charges of transporting undocumented migrants. Abrego Garcia\u2019s return comes after the Trump administration repeatedly<\/a> opposed court orders<\/a> requiring the government to take steps to return him after his wrongful removal by immigration officials.<\/p>\n \u201cToday\u2019s action proves what we\u2019ve known all along\u2014that the administration had the ability to bring him back and just refused to do so,\u201d Andrew Rossman<\/strong>, a lawyer for Abrego Garcia, said. \u201cIt\u2019s now up to our judicial system to see that Mr. Abrego Garcia receives the due process that the Constitution guarantees to all persons.\u201d<\/p>\n Abrego Garcia was erroneously deported on March 15<\/a>, more than two months before the charges were filed, according to Reuters. He was held in El Salvador’s mega-prison known as the Terrorism Confinement Center (or CECOT)<\/a>, despite a 2019 order<\/a> that found his life would be in danger if he were sent back.<\/p>\n In April, the US Supreme Court held<\/a> that the Trump administration was required to “facilitate” the release of Abrego Garcia. As The New York Times<\/em> reported<\/a> later that month, the Justice Department \u201cseemed not to understand\u201d the three court orders directing them to act, \u201cor perhaps was simply ignoring them.\u201d<\/p>\n
