John Mulaney<\/a>, 42, andhe couple expanded their family through surrogacy following Olivia\u2019s breast cancer diagnosis in April 2023. Reflecting on the emotional journey of welcoming her now eight-month-old daughter M\u00e9i via surrogate, Olivia told People: \u201cIt was the first time I was like, \u2018Oh wait, is this what it\u2019s like to be an expectant dad?\u2019\u201d After undergoing extensive treatment \u2014 including a lymph node dissection, nipple delay procedure, and double mastectomy \u2014 Olivia faced surgical menopause following the removal of her uterus, fallopian tubes, and ovaries during her cancer battle. <\/p>\n\u201cIt was important to do it at that moment, but it was also scary because my type of cancer feeds on hormones, and there are a lot of hormone injections with IVF,\u201d she said, referring to the fertility preservation process she underwent before her hysterectomy.<\/p>\n
Her doctor devised a special IVF protocol tailored for cancer patients, enabling Olivia to retrieve seven eggs. <\/p>\n
\u201cAt my age, about one in 10 eggs is healthy,\u201d she explained. <\/p>\n
\nAfter fertilisation, two embryos were \u201cstrong enough to be tested for abnormalities and the gender\u201d. <\/p>\n
\nShe and John hoped for a girl, with Olivia saying: \u201cI remember I was on a walk with John, and I said, \u2018I really don\u2019t think that I\u2019ll be okay unless we get two girl embryos. I know this puts me at risk, but I just need you to support me,\u2019\u201d she recalled. Mulaney responded: \u201c\u2018Whatever you need.\u2019\u201d <\/p>\n
\nThat same day, Olivia received a call confirming both embryos were female. <\/p>\n
\n\u201cThat was a sign for me everything was going to be okay,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n
\nThe couple then embarked on the \u201cemotional process\u201d of finding a surrogate. <\/p>\n
\n\u201cThe number one thing that I wanted in a surrogate was someone who was kind,\u201d Olivia said. <\/p>\n
\nA friend\u2019s recommendation led them to an agency, which presented two potential surrogates. <\/p>\n
\nOne candidate expressed a desire to help someone who had survived cancer. \u201cAfter meeting with her, I knew she was the right person to carry our daughter,\u201d Olivia said. <\/p>\n
\nShe added: \u201cThe first thing I worried about was if I would be able to find somebody who would love and take care of my daughter as much as I would. <\/p>\n
\n\u201cWe were so lucky to find someone so kind who we bonded with so much.\u201d<\/p>\n
