Lucille Ball<\/strong><\/a> and Desi Arnaz<\/strong><\/a>\u2019s children, Desi Arnaz Jr.<\/strong> and Lucie Arnaz<\/strong>, are pulling back the curtain on their childhood \u2014 and revealing what it was like growing up on I Love Lucy<\/em>.<\/p>\n

Lucie, 73, recalled in biographer Todd S. Purdum<\/strong>\u2019s new book, Desi Arnaz: The Man Who Invented Television<\/em><\/a>, how different her famous parents<\/a> were when it came to dealing with her and brother Desi Jr., now 72.<\/p>\n

Lucie remembered that her mom \u201ctook it personally\u201d when one of the kids would disappoint her. Her dad, meanwhile, \u201cWas not like that,\u201d according to Lucie\u2019s rare interviews with Purdum.<\/p>\n

\u201cHe would get really angry and blow his stack, and be loud, but then he\u2019d be done, and it would be like it never happened,\u201d Lucie explained in the book, per People<\/em><\/a>. \u201cLike a storm just passed. The storm never said, \u2018I\u2019m sorry,\u2019 the storm never left a note saying, \u2018I\u2019m sorry, that wasn\u2019t your fault.\u2019 But it stopped, right?\u201d<\/p>\n

In contrast, Ball would take offense to the children\u2019s missteps because of how it allegedly reflected on her. \u201cMy mother would get personally offended by childhood behavior or what you said, because you should have known not to say that somehow, even though no one\u2019s taught you what to say,\u201d Lucille recounted. \u201cAnd she would emotionally separate from you for however long she wanted to. And it would be sometimes days, sometimes weeks.\u201d<\/p>\n

Ball and Desi wed in 1940 after Ball had been working in Hollywood for decades<\/a>. Desi, meanwhile, made his acting debut that same year after gaining fame as a musician.<\/p>\n

Their love story soon inspired their hit sitcom I Love Lucy<\/em><\/a>, which ran from 1951 to 1957. On the series, Ball played Lucy Ricardo, wife of band leader Ricky Ricardo (Desi), who gets into the wildest predicaments while trying to become a star in her own right.<\/p>\n

Both Desi Jr. and Lucie were present when their parents shot the sitcom<\/a>, but they had different experiences on set. Lucie remembered trying to \u201chide under the bleacher\u201d when she was introduced to the audience. Desi Jr. said he on the other hand \u201cwas very much embracing the whole thing.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tLiza Minnelli called her mother, Judy Garland, the \u201cmost challenging\u201d part of her childhood. \u201cMy mother was fascinating because she knew so many fascinating people who would come over,\u201d Minnelli, 78, said in an Interview magazine profile published Wednesday, October 16. She also spoke about her father, Vincente Minnelli, referring to him as the \u201cmost [\u2026]\t\t<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

Following the success of I Love Lucy<\/em>, the husband-and-wife duo starred on The Lucy-Desi Comedy Hour<\/em> from 1957 to 1960. As the show came to an end, so did Ball and Desi\u2019s marriage. The pair divorced in 1960, and their kids were not surprised.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt wasn\u2019t good for anyone,\u201d Desi Jr. recalled in the book of his parents\u2019 tumultuous relationship prior to their split. \u201cAnd we\u2019ll always remember when they sat us down and said, \u2018Look, you know, things aren\u2019t working.\u2019 I mean, I remember word for word.\u201d<\/p>\n

Ball went on to lead multiple series of her own, including The Lucy Show<\/em> from 1962 to 1968, Here\u2019s Lucy<\/em> from 1968 to 1974 and Life With Lucy<\/em> in 1986. She starred in more than 120 movies and TV shows combined and was an executive producer on over 70 projects.<\/p>\n

Desi also continued to act post-split, starring on The Mothers-In-Law<\/em> from 1967 to 1968 and making cameos on The Virginian<\/em> and Alice<\/em>. He was an executive producer on several of Ball\u2019s projects and hits such as Stark Trek<\/em> and ABC Late Night<\/em>. However, much of Desi\u2019s acting and musical success was overshadowed by his ups and downs with alcoholism.<\/p>\n

Like his father, Desi Jr. struggled with addiction and sought treatment in 1981 after living life in the spotlight since birth. Four years later, Desi asked his son for advice and checked into an alcohol rehabilitation program<\/a> at Scripps McDonald Center in California under the name \u201cBill Sanchez\u201d to protect his identity.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt was really nice,\u201d Desi Jr. told the book author of connecting with his father during such a hard time. \u201cBecause whatever I was going through, it was paying off. I said, \u2018I can\u2019t do anything for you, but there\u2019s a place that can.\u2019 He understood that.\u201d<\/p>\n

Desi Jr. noted that despite being so successful, his father felt lonely in fame. \u201cThat\u2019s when he realized the emptiness \u2014 at the crest of his success,\u201d Desi Jr. said. \u201cHe didn\u2019t stop drinking. He didn\u2019t know what the real poison was. This is a temporary life.\u201d<\/p>\n
