Farrell\u2019s was <em><a href=\"https:\/\/www.vanityfair.com\/hollywood\/story\/the-penguin-hbo-show-colin-farrell-review?srsltid=AfmBOooytZO2yzmDfV5U82lcHPXjj3JXZsE_TzfeCyfqpHxBiJZzl7Us\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">The Penguin<\/a>,<\/em> the gritty HBO series in which he transformed (with about three hours a day of prosthetics and makeup) into Gotham City\u2019s infamous villain.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paywall\">They followed up those two iconic characters with <em>A Big Bold Beautiful Journey,<\/em> an original romance about two strangers taken on an unexpected journey. \u201cGoing from <em>The Penguin<\/em> to this was quite simply stepping from the darkness into the light,\u201d Farrell tells <em>Vanity Fair.<\/em> \u201cAs amazing as it was to work on <em>The Penguin,<\/em> that story was all about trauma and its various articulations and calcifications. This film is all about letting go of trauma\u2014moving past it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paywall\">Though Robbie had produced other projects in the interim, she hadn\u2019t stepped in front of a camera since making <em>Barbie<\/em> in 2022. \u201cI think that\u2019s the longest break I\u2019ve ever had between jobs. I thought it would be more scary to be walking onto the <em>Big Bold<\/em> set on day one, but it wasn\u2019t,\u201d she says. \u201cEverything about this film was immediately comfortable.\u201d<\/p>\n<div data-testid=\"feature-large-callout\" class=\"CalloutFeatureLargeWrapper-cGjDsT kWuXrO\">\n<figure class=\"AssetEmbedWrapper-eVDQiB byBkf asset-embed\">\n<div class=\"AssetEmbedAssetContainer-eJxoAx dBHGoQ asset-embed__asset-container\"><span class=\"SpanWrapper-umhxW lgCwTv responsive-asset AssetEmbedResponsiveAsset-cXBNxi lqMXz asset-embed__responsive-asset\"><picture class=\"ResponsiveImagePicture-cWuUZO dUOtEa AssetEmbedResponsiveAsset-cXBNxi lqMXz asset-embed__responsive-asset responsive-image\"><noscript><\/noscript><\/picture><\/span><\/div>\n<p><span class=\"BaseWrap-sc-gjQpdd BaseText-ewhhUZ CaptionCredit-ejegDm iUEiRd cvffOM fNaHcW caption__credit\">Matt Kennedy\/Sony Pictures.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/figure>\n<\/div>\n<p class=\"paywall\">That comfort came from the story\u2014and from director <strong>Kogonada,<\/strong> who was also looking to go on a big journey with his next movie. After two critically acclaimed projects\u2014<a href=\"https:\/\/www.vanityfair.com\/hollywood\/2017\/01\/columbus-movie-review-sundance-john-cho?srsltid=AfmBOop-a8H1jjSlcrLNJc8tPkUlkFntRzNl0RVJ1pGl_FR8EMjYzO02\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">2017\u2019s <em>Columbus<\/em><\/a> and 2021\u2019s <em>After Yang<\/em>\u2014and a few years of TV work, he was ready to take on a different sort of project. \u201cI was looking for something a little bit larger and lighter,\u201d he says. \u201cI\u2019m a big fan of comedy and romance, but I wanted it in a kind of original context.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paywall\">Then <strong>Seth Reiss<\/strong>\u2019s script for <em>A Big Bold Beautiful Journey<\/em> landed on his desk. It was a sweeping and emotional tale following Sarah and David, who, after connecting at a wedding, are cosmicly brought together and shown doorways to their memories. (Watch the trailer below). \u201cThis film is really about reckoning with your past in order to find the possibility of love in the present,\u201d says Kogonada. \u201cWhat do you have to reckon with in order to truly connect with other people? And I think as you get older, you realize your past has everything to do with how you understand love in the present.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paywall\">Sony will release <em>A Big Bold Beautiful Journey<\/em> in theaters on September 19. In his meditative directorial debut, 2017\u2019s <em>Columbus,<\/em> two strangers <em>(<\/em><strong>John Cho<\/strong> and <strong>Haley Lu Richardson<\/strong>) wander around that city\u2019s architectural marvels while sharing truths about their lives and their relationships to their parents. His follow-up, the 2021 film <em>After Yang,<\/em> starred Farell and Jodie Turner-Smith as parents whose android son malfunctions. While futuristic in nature, the film grapples with complex ideas about family, grief, and loss. It was another critical hit and won an award at the Sundance Film Festival.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paywall\">He\u2019s a soulful filmmaker who is known for his visual style, capturing a world that feels both familiar and completely unique.
