Natalie Portman still feels like people see her as a child<\/p>\n
The 43-year-old actress – who rose to fame as a child in 1999’s ‘Star Wars: Episode I – The Phantom Menace’ – insisted that despite growing up in the spotlight and developing a “serious persona” to combat people’s perceptions of her, she is still fighting against it.<\/p>\n
During a conversation about Jenna Ortega, Natalie told Harper’s Bazaar magazine: \u201cWe\u2019re both physically tiny, so people will often treat you like a child forever.<\/p>\n
\u201cI\u2019m 43 now, and people kind of pat me on the head. I don\u2019t look like a child, but I often feel like I\u2019m treated like a kid.<\/p>\n
“Child actors often cultivate a serious persona because otherwise they\u2019ll get treated like kids forever.<\/p>\n
\n“When you start working as a kid, you kind of always feel like a kid in the workplace. Having some of that seriousness helps remind people, \u2018I\u2019m a grown-up.\u2019\u200a\u201d<\/p>\n
\nNatalie and Jenna have worked together in new comedy thriller ‘The Gallerist’, and the ‘Fountain of Youth’ actress noticed they have a similar process in between takes.<\/p>\n
\nShe explained: \u201cWe don\u2019t sit in a chair; we just kind of squat in the corner.<\/p>\n
\n“Catherine Zeta-Jones, who was also a child actress, said she did it too \u2014 that it\u2019s a way of grounding yourself.<\/p>\n
\n“There\u2019d be all these chairs, but we\u2019d just squat and look at each other and be like, \u2018Wow, this is weird.\u2019\u2009\u201d<\/p>\n
\nMeanwhile, Jenna opened up on how much it’s helped her becoming friends with the likes of Natalie, Winona Ryder and Natasha Lyonne, who all understand the journey she’s on.<\/p>\n
\nShe said: \u201cIt\u2019s been so beneficial and so cozy. They\u2019ve seen it all, and, honestly, during a much darker time in Hollywood.<\/p>\n
\n“We\u2019ve all got this jaded way about us that I don\u2019t think we\u2019d have if we hadn\u2019t started so young and had so many brutal realisations and experiences…<\/p>\n
\n\u201cBut they turned out all right.\u201d<\/p>\n
