I don\u2019t really know sometimes and I know other times,\u201d Mendes said. <\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt feels really scary because we live in a society that has a lot to say about that. Something I was figuring out in myself. It felt like a moment where I could address it in a way that felt close to my heart,\u201d he said. \u201cI\u2019m just speaking freely now because I want to be closer to everyone and be in my truth.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Mendes had formerly spoken out about the stress of dealing with rumors about his sexuality.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIn the back of my heart, I feel like I need to go be seen with someone \u2014 like a girl \u2014 in public, to prove to people that I\u2019m not gay,\u201d he told Rolling Stone back in 2018.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cEven though in my heart I know that it\u2019s not a bad thing. There\u2019s still a piece of me that thinks that.
