UPDATE \u2014 5\/27\/25, 4:20 p.m. ET: <\/b>Shaboozey<\/strong> responded after his reaction about the origins of country music went viral at the 2025 American Music Awards.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cWhen you uncover the true history of country music, you find a story so powerful that it cannot be erased\u2026,\u201d Shaboozey posted via X<\/a> on Tuesday, May 27.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

In a follow-up post<\/a>, he wrote, \u201cThe real history of country music is about people coming together despite their differences, and embracing and celebrating the things that make us alike.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

Shaboozey<\/strong> was on hand to present at the American Music Awards<\/a> this weekend \u2014 and he had no time for misinformation about the history of country music.<\/p>\n

The country hitmaker, 30, presented Favorite Country Duo or Group<\/a> at the awards show on Monday, May 26, with fellow singer-songwriter Megan Moroney<\/strong>, but he couldn\u2019t hide his annoyance at one line she read off the teleprompter.<\/p>\n

\u201cCountry music has been an important part of AMA history,\u201d Shaboozey began. \u201cThe very first year of this show, the award for Favorite Male Country Artist went to the great Charley Pride<\/strong>.\u201d<\/p>\n

Moroney, 27, continued, \u201cThat same year, Favorite Female [Country] Artist went to Lynn Anderson<\/strong>, and this award went to the Carter Family, who basically invented country music.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tOne of the biggest nights in music is also a showcase for some of the most popular artists and performers in the industry to show off their red carpet style. The 2025 American Music Awards, hosted by Jennifer Lopez, takes place on Monday, May 26, at the Fontainebleau Las Vegas, airing live at 8 p.m. [\u2026]\t\t<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

It was the latter half of that sentence that Shaboozey seemingly had a problem with, as he turned to Moroney and rolled his eyes. He then let out a little laugh before continuing to list off the nominees in the category. (Dan + Shay took home this year\u2019s trophy.)<\/p>\n

While it is true that the Carter Family is known as the \u201cFirst Family of Country Music\u201d because of their early contributions to the genre, they drew heavily on the work of Black guitarist Lesley Riddle<\/strong>, who traveled around Appalachia with A.P. Carter<\/strong> on his song-collecting trips. The Carter Family recorded several of Riddle\u2019s compositions, and Maybelle Carter<\/strong> incorporated elements of his guitar playing into her style.<\/p>\n

The banjo, meanwhile, traces its origins to Africa, despite its contemporary association with American bluegrass.<\/p>\n

\u201cBlack people invented the banjo!\u201d country musician Rhiannon Giddens<\/strong> explained to Variety<\/em><\/a> in 2023. \u201cHistory isn\u2019t simple \u2014 especially American history, which is super complicated because of the way that America came to be and the amounts of different cultures that mixed and mingled, and the economic juggernaut that was slavery. The banjo is existing in this world. And I guess what I want people to understand is that you can\u2019t talk about the banjo without talking about slavery. You have to talk about slavery, you have to talk about minstrelsy, you have to talk about the segregation of American music. Those are the three main points. And if you\u2019re not talking about those things when you talk about the banjo, then you\u2019re just serving a simplified narrative that\u2019s actually doing us harm, because it\u2019s not just simplified, it\u2019s actually false.\u201d<\/p>\n
