Cynthia Nixon has acknowledged Sex and the City’s flaws<\/p>\n
The 59-year-old actress – who played Miranda Hobbs in the iconic comedy drama between 1998 and 2004 – has insisted while most of the show is “still pretty great”, other aspects wouldn’t work if the show was made today.<\/p>\n
Reflecting on how badly some things have “aged”, she told Grazia magazine: “It was always very difficult being on a show that was so white.<\/p>\n
“I always hated that. When we would raise it, we were told: this is Candace Bushnell\u2019s world and it\u2019s a very white world.<\/p>\n
“I\u2019m like, ‘OK\u2026\u2019 [And] some of the trans stuff, some of the gay stuff was a little cringy to look at.”<\/p>\n
\nDespite its shortcomings, Cynthia – who is married to wife Christine Marinoni – insisted ‘Sex and the City’ remains a “feminist show”.<\/p>\n
\nShe said: “It\u2019s always been a feminist show. What you have to remember is that we were in our thirties and forties.<\/p>\n
\n“Of course, I look at the show now, we look like babies, but being single at that age, at that time, still had a kind of stigma.”<\/p>\n
\nCynthia – whose character Miranda mirrored real life by coming out as gay in revival series ‘And Just Like That’ – pointed out that there was a revolutionary message at the heart of the show.<\/p>\n
\nShe added: “You can be a woman, you can have a lot of sex with a lot of different people.<\/p>\n
\n“It didn\u2019t make you a slut and it didn\u2019t mean you were using sex to get something. You were having sex \u2013 because you enjoyed having sex!”<\/p>\n
\nCynthia previously revealed how she and her original co-stars Sarah Jessica Parker, Kristin Davis and Kim Cattrall were combarded with hate when the original show first aired.<\/p>\n
\nShe told Page Six: “People have always been very passionate about \u2018Sex and the City\u2019 and now \u2018And Just Like That\u2019.<\/p>\n
\n\u201cI feel like \u2018Sex and the City\u2019 is now so enshrined in memory and sentimentality but people hated us at first.<\/p>\n
\n\u201cThey kept saying over and over, \u2018These aren\u2019t really women, these are gay men in disguise. Women don\u2019t talk like this. Women don\u2019t talk about sex like this.\u2019 \u201d<\/p>\n
