Just because it\u2019s a kid\u2019s birthday party doesn\u2019t mean the adults can\u2019t have fun too\u2014and no, we\u2019re not just talking about wine and beer in Solo cups (although that doesn\u2019t hurt). This summer, we\u2019re rethinking what a kid-friendly birthday bash can look like: Think platters of French pastries, silver coupes filled with grapes, and homemade paper chains that are prettier than the ones you remember from kindergarten.<\/p>\n
Most recently, we\u2019re looking to Tess Gigone<\/a>\u2014Toronto-based creator and our resident recipe try-er in It\u2019s Fine<\/em><\/a>\u2014for all the inspiration. At Food52, we\u2019ve seen her tackle classic recipes for the first time ever (gracefully, might I add). And if there\u2019s one thing we\u2019ve learned from watching her, it\u2019s that she has an incredible eye.<\/p>\n In one of our recent episodes<\/a>, she took on a 1950s jello salad mold (yes, complete with tuna, cucumbers, and neon green jello) and still managed to make it look enticing, with a green dress to match. She\u2019s one of those effortlessly cool people you\u2019re always curious about. You might know her from her cooking videos, but she also has great taste beyond the kitchen.<\/p>\n So it\u2019s no surprise that when she recently threw a birthday party for her one-year-old daughter, it ended up being cooler than most of my adult parties combined.<\/p>\n \u201cI didn’t start with a specific theme, but the celebration naturally evolved into something wonderfully whimsical,\u201d she told me.<\/p>\n That translated into delicate florals everywhere, cakes topped with daisies, and yes, even a plate of canel\u00e9s with a couple of birthday candles tucked in. The fact that I had to confirm what a canel\u00e9 was says it all.<\/p>\n
