That decade was arguably a high point for thrill-seeking movie fans, with a seemingly endless supply of commercial and critical hits like <em>Basic Instinct<\/em> with <strong>Michael Douglas<\/strong> and <strong>Sharon Stone<\/strong> and <em>Se7en<\/em> with <a href=\"https:\/\/www.usmagazine.com\/celebrities\/brad-pitt\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>Brad Pitt<\/strong><\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.usmagazine.com\/celebrities\/gwyneth-paltrow\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>Gwyneth Paltrow<\/strong><\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.usmagazine.com\/watch-with-us\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Watch With Us<\/a> picks the 10 best thrillers of the \u201890s and ranks them from the very good to the absolute best. This month, we\u2019re highlighting one of Angus Cloud\u2018s final films, Your Lucky Day, as well as the [\u2026]\t\t<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p>Often derogatorily described as \u201cthe killer nanny movie,\u201d <em>The Hand That Rocks the Cradle<\/em> is better and subtler than its trashy reputation suggests. As Peyton, DeMornay brings real pathos to her disturbed caretaker and pulls off the impossible trick of making her more sympathetic than Sciorra\u2019s frustratingly helpless Claire. After catching her longtime boyfriend cheating on her, she kicks him out and places an advertisement looking for a \u201cSWF\u201d (Single White Female) roommate to share her spacious Manhattan apartment. That\u2019s how she meets Hedy (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.usmagazine.com\/celebrities\/jennifer-jason-leigh\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>Jennifer Jason Leigh<\/strong><\/a>), who soon moves into Allie\u2019s place and slowly takes over her life. Hedy is just as needy as Allie, and she\u2019s willing to kill to remain in her new roommate\u2019s life.<\/p>\n<p><em>Single White Female<\/em> has a lurid premise, but the two lead actresses invest enough depth and conviction in their roles to make the thriller better than others. Hedy is clearly disturbed, but Jason Leigh lets you see the full extent of Hedy\u2019s lethal neediness. Allie isn\u2019t that much different from Hedy, and Fonda excels in showing Allie\u2019s subtle transformation from victim to hero by the film\u2019s end. <em>Single White Female<\/em> is one of the more stylish thrillers on this list, and its blue-tinged cinematography gives the film a unique, moody look that is hard to forget.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/pluto.tv\/us\/on-demand\/movies\/5b805a9f53abc1a358059cfe\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><em>Single White Female<\/em> is streaming on Pluto TV.<\/a><\/p>\n<h3>7. \u2018Se7en\u2019 (1995)<\/h3>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Se7en (1995) Official Trailer - Brad Pitt, Morgan Freeman Movie HD\" width=\"696\" height=\"392\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/znmZoVkCjpI?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat\u2019s in the box?\u201d Detective David Mills (<strong>Brad Pitt<\/strong>) desperately asks his partner, William Somerset (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.usmagazine.com\/celebrities\/morgan-j-freeman\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>Morgan Freeman<\/strong><\/a>), near the end of <em>Se7en<\/em>. He already knows the answer\u2014 and so do we. The events leading up to that devastating moment are just as nauseating and fascinating, making <em>Se7en<\/em> one of the few thrillers you\u2019re glad to have seen and never want to watch again.<\/p>\n<p>Two city detectives, David and William, team up to investigate a series of murders based on the seven deadly sins: gluttony, lust, pride \u2014 you get the idea. As each murder is increasingly more bizarre and violent than the next, the two detectives race against time to stop him before he claims more victims.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.amazon.com\/gp\/video\/detail\/amzn1.dv.gti.58a9f7ae-e989-6bf7-a14d-e7465c7e1aa6\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><em>Se7en <\/em>can be rented or purchased on Amazon Prime Video.<\/a><\/p>\n<h3>6. \u2018Malice\u2019 (1993)<\/h3>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Malice (1993) | trailer\" width=\"696\" height=\"392\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/W_eaJIdXb14?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p><em>Malice<\/em> offers the best value on this list \u2014 it\u2019s two thrillers in one movie, and there\u2019s little connection between the two. A serial rapist is terrorizing a small campus town, and Prof. Andy Safian (<strong>Bill Pullman<\/strong>) is both a suspect and maybe the only man who can catch the assailant. Meanwhile, Andy\u2019s wife, Tracy (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.usmagazine.com\/celebrities\/nicole-kidman\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>Nicole Kidman<\/strong><\/a>), loses the ability to have children due to a botched emergency surgery conducted by Andy\u2019s old friend, Jed (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.usmagazine.com\/celebrities\/alec-baldwin\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>Alec Baldwin<\/strong><\/a>). Did Jed deliberately harm Tracy due to a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.avclub.com\/alec-baldwin-declares-himself-god-in-the-big-scene-from-1798241666\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">God complex<\/a>? Discovery. For instance, the company just announced that its streaming service, Max, will revert to its original name, HBO Max. (Most people still call it that anyway, so it\u2019s not that big of a deal.) What is notable, however, is HBO Max\u2019s May movie lineup, which boasts [\u2026]\t\t<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p><em>Malice<\/em> is a curiosity \u2014 both plots don\u2019t really add up, and you\u2019re left wondering why it bothered to have two of them instead of one. But that doesn\u2019t mean it isn\u2019t an effective thriller filled with atmospheric shots of shadowy homes and secret seaside cabins, a creepy score by <strong>Jerry Goldsmith<\/strong> and memorably nasty turns by Baldwin and Kidman. <em>Malice<\/em> also has one of the great comeuppance endings in the thriller genre when the bad guy gets a nice dose of karmic justice.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.amazon.com\/gp\/video\/detail\/amzn1.dv.gti.74b5e20e-7c7c-2e03-e57d-d6685f5386b9\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><em>Malice<\/em> can be rented on Amazon Prime Video.<\/a><\/p>\n<h3>5. \u2018Copycat\u2019 (1995)<\/h3>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Copycat serial killer - &quot;Copycat&quot; - Sigourney Weaver\" width=\"696\" height=\"392\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/gGQe_YokD-c?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>Dr. Helen Hudson (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.usmagazine.com\/celebrities\/sigourney-weaver\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>Sigourney Weaver<\/strong><\/a>) is a rich and successful criminal psychologist who is agoraphobic due to a past attack by a deranged fan. Her mind is still sharp, though, and she\u2019s the only one who is noticing that a serial killer is stalking San Francisco and copying famous killers like Son of Sam and Ted Bundy. She begrudgingly teams up with two detectives, MJ (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.usmagazine.com\/celebrities\/holly-hunter\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>Holly Hunter<\/strong><\/a>) and Reuben (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.usmagazine.com\/celebrities\/dermot-mulroney\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>Dermot Mulroney<\/strong><\/a>), to find the killer before he strikes again.<\/p>\n<p><em>Copycat<\/em> is a rare thriller with two female leads who function as both the damsel in distress and the hero of the story. What makes the thriller even more fascinating \u2014 and entertaining \u2014 is that Helen and MJ don\u2019t really like each other. Both women get on each other\u2019s nerves, but are smart enough to realize they are the only ones who, together, can catch the copycat murderer.<\/p>\n<p>Weaver and Hunter provide real dimension to their characters, and aren\u2019t concerned with making them likable or even relatable. You still pull for them to succeed, though, and that\u2019s what makes <em>Copycat<\/em> one of the best thrillers in any decade.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.hulu.com\/movie\/copycat-ac16f0da-bac7-457a-b387-e97c50d3b726\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><em>Copycat<\/em> is streaming on Hulu.<\/a><\/p>\n<h3>4. \u2018Cape Fear\u2019 (1991)<\/h3>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Come Out, Come Out, Wherever You Are - Cape Fear (5\/10) Movie CLIP (1991) HD\" width=\"696\" height=\"392\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/6vO-XDUiRqU?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>Max Cady (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.usmagazine.com\/celebrities\/robert-de-niro\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>Robert De Niro<\/strong><\/a>) is a career criminal with an axe to grind. He believes his defense attorney, Sam Bowden (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.usmagazine.com\/celebrities\/nick-nolte\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>Nick Nolte<\/strong><\/a>), deliberately lost his case years ago so he could spend time behind bars for the rape of a 16-year-old girl. Now free, Max enacts a revenge plan that involves seducing Sam\u2019s daughter, Dani (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.usmagazine.com\/celebrities\/juliette-lewis\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>Juliette Lewis<\/strong><\/a>), and alienating Sam from his depressed wife, Lee (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.usmagazine.com\/celebrities\/jessica-lange\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>Jessica Lange<\/strong><\/a>). Sam might have to go beyond the law to protect his family and deal with Max once and for all.<\/p>\n<p>A remake of a so-so 1962 thriller of the same name, this version is more nuanced, more violent and infinitely better. Credit director <a href=\"https:\/\/www.usmagazine.com\/celebrities\/martin-scorsese\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>Martin Scorsese<\/strong><\/a> for using the bones of <em>Cape Fear<\/em>\u2019s original story and crafting a superior remake that\u2019s just as interested in showing how damaged a seemingly typical American family really is as he is at scaring audiences with Max\u2019s periodic violent outbursts.<\/p>\n<p>De Niro got an Oscar nomination for his unsettling performance, but just as good are Nolte and Lange as a married couple whose love has been overwhelmed by their mutual exhaustion with one another. The great cinematographer Freddie Francis gave the film a dreamy, hallucinatory feel, and Scorsese wisely left Bernard Herrmann\u2019s original tense score largely intact.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.amazon.com\/gp\/video\/detail\/amzn1.dv.gti.96a9f757-1882-39fb-953b-bcdff239697c\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><em>Cape Fear<\/em> can be rented on Amazon Prime Video.<\/a><\/p>\n<h3>3. \u2018The Talented Mr. Ripley\u2019 (1999)<\/h3>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"The Talented Mr. Ripley (1999) Trailer #1 | Movieclips Classic Trailers\" width=\"696\" height=\"392\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/h4e-Si4oGEw?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>It\u2019s New York in the 1950s, and Tom Ripley (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.usmagazine.com\/celebrities\/matt-damon\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>Matt Damon<\/strong><\/a>), broke and alone, is offered a unique job: travel to Italy to persuade a wealthy man\u2019s son, Dickie Greenleaf (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.usmagazine.com\/celebrities\/jude-law\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>Jude Law<\/strong><\/a>), to return to the United States. Tom accepts, but he quickly likes Dickie\u2019s la dolce vita too much and decides to murder him and assume his identity. To kick off May, Watch With Us has selected [\u2026]\t\t<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p><em>The Talented Mr. Ripley<\/em> remains the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.indiewire.com\/gallery\/best-tom-ripley-movies-adaptations-ranked\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">best of all the Ripley adaptations<\/a> because it excels as an escapist thriller that never loses sight of the loneliness that both fuels and cripples its lead character. Tom wants what others have, and murder is a justifiable means to get to a desired end. That\u2019s both a compliment and a warning, as nothing can really prepare you for what she does in <em>The Last Seduction<\/em>, a modest neo-noir from 1994 that\u2019s still as brittle and brilliant after all these years.<\/p>\n<p>Longtime New Yorker Bridget has stolen some drug money from her abusive dentist husband, Clay (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.usmagazine.com\/entertainment\/news\/why-bill-pullman-almost-quit-while-you-were-sleeping\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>Bill Pullman<\/strong><\/a>), and she\u2019s lying low in a small town so she can get a quickie divorce. But when she meets dumb, good-hearted Mike, she soon concocts a plan to get rich quick and maybe get rid of Clay without the help of a lawyer.<\/p>\n<p>Directed by <strong>John Dahl<\/strong>, <em>The Last Seduction<\/em> doesn\u2019t get enough credit for its lean, mean direction (not a second is wasted) and tight story. But this is Fiorentino\u2019s show all the way, and she\u2019s hypnotic whenever she\u2019s on screen. Her Bridget is always cool and collected, even when things don\u2019t go according to her plan. It\u2019s always entertaining, even if it\u2019s often in bad taste, and it\u2019s dominated by Stone\u2019s blonde femme fatale. It\u2019s obvious Catherine is the killer, but the genius of her performance is that she convinces Nick \u2014 and you \u2014 that she\u2019s innocent. The main thrill of <em>Basic Instinct<\/em> isn\u2019t finding out who did it, but piecing together the puzzle afterwards.
