{"id":169481,"date":"2025-05-20T19:06:59","date_gmt":"2025-05-20T19:06:59","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/entertainment.runfyers.com\/index.php\/2025\/05\/20\/what-has-changed-since-george-floyds-death-and-what-hasnt\/"},"modified":"2025-05-20T19:06:59","modified_gmt":"2025-05-20T19:06:59","slug":"what-has-changed-since-george-floyds-death-and-what-hasnt","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/entertainment.runfyers.com\/index.php\/2025\/05\/20\/what-has-changed-since-george-floyds-death-and-what-hasnt\/","title":{"rendered":"What Has Changed Since George Floyd\u2019s Death\u2014And What Hasn\u2019t"},"content":{"rendered":"<p> <br \/>\n<\/p>\n<div>\n<p class=\"has-dropcap\">When I think of America\u2019s trajectory since the murder of George Floyd, I can\u2019t help but hear in my head the lyrics from the Notorious B.I.G.\u2019s 1994 hit \u201cJuicy\u201d: \u201cIt was all a dream.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Five years ago this week, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.vanityfair.com\/news\/2021\/05\/george-floyd-was-alive-a-year-ago-yesterday?srsltid=AfmBOopuhHfJqywIBjeSB57K-2ZC3epHSzQt-ZFqUMunbLEMem2bUCWO\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">George Floyd<\/a>\u2014a part-time bouncer, rapper, and former high school athlete\u2014was killed in broad daylight by Minneapolis police officer <strong>Derek Chauvin,<\/strong> who was later found guilty of murder. The slaying was captured in a cell phone video by a daring teenage onlooker named <strong>Darnella Frazier.<\/strong> She managed to keep her camera running for a harrowing 10 minutes, much of the recording showing Floyd being pinned to the ground, under Chauvin\u2019s knee. The ripple effects from those demonstrations gave hope to millions, brought meaning to many, and spurred sweeping social action. As part of a national \u201cracial reckoning,\u201d corporations and academia rushed to make financial and structural commitments to bolster efforts supporting equity and justice. A long-observed holiday in the Black community, called <a href=\"https:\/\/www.vanityfair.com\/news\/2021\/06\/juneteenth-critical-race-theory-and-the-winding-road-toward-reckoning?srsltid=AfmBOoqQifx4jZMRUodTFuv_iSrjH9k2rhmZsswo_abzEMIt9cM10C4w\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Juneteenth<\/a>, became a federal one. Arts spaces and the public square became even more fertile grounds for elevating too-little-discussed narratives of the experiences of communities of color.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paywall\">But in the half decade since, America\u2019s capacity to grapple with itself has swung widely from the arc of justice, to paraphrase Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., to a more cruel, divisive state of being. The US now seems to be at a juncture in its historical journey that calls to mind the gravest periods of the nation\u2019s past.<\/p>\n<aside aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"PullQuoteEmbedWrapper-sc-EoVjf fQbAzo\" data-testid=\"pullquote-embed\">\n<div class=\"PullQuoteEmbedContent-sc-kTcfhx iKEmcs\">\n<p class=\"paywall\">SOCIAL JUSTICE MOVES AT THE SPEED AND PLEASURE OF WHITENESS.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/aside>\n<p class=\"paywall\">Five years ago, just months into the pandemic, I allowed myself to hope. I allowed myself to believe that George Floyd\u2019s death, and the widespread revulsion to it, somehow marked a turning point in the country\u2019s centuries of struggle with race, identity, and belonging. The reality now is much more complicated, much more challenging. The bitter truth that has been gnawing at me and at so many Black Americans since May 25, 2020, is this: Social justice often moves at the speed and pleasure of whiteness.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paywall\">Since European colonists first \u201csettled\u201d what was then Indigenous land, many Americans have tended to see more recent immigrants\u2014at least those who happen not to be white\u2014as the \u201cother.\u201d Still, a new kind of <em>othering<\/em> is rearing its ugly head.
